Yeah me too, things cannot remain broken in device manager.

That's definitely me. Was that way with Windows 95 still that way in Windows 10. Can't let it go

I usually let Windows Update pick drivers for me. It does its job well 99,99% of the time.

The most misunderstood thing about Windows drivers is they're there to provide a basic starting point, which may not necessarily to provide optimized performance. And why you should always use vendor specific drivers where available, which also provide the control panels and customization packages needed for certain devices - example GPU, keyboards, Mice, to name a few.

Also Windows doesn't provide all drivers for all devices... soundcards would be an example.

My advice is, and always will be, is to get the vendor specific drivers where available

In some cases, for older hardware, manufacturer drivers may be older than the ones offered via WU, as is the case with my X99 Gigabyte board.

There's always going to be some galactic "what if", but the general premises still apply... get the drivers from the vendor. And in the case of the motherboard... and "old" driver is better than no driver.

At the end of the day though it's your system not mine.

    Peace

Windows Update installs correct chipset drivers for my x99 board. Gigabyte ones are dated 2015; Microsoft ones are dated 2016-2017. I guess any of them will do.
