wow there is really no benefit to installing or point to updating your chipset drivers if they are functioning and detected correctly in device manager, there will be no performance gains at all from updating them, all they do is tell your system how to properly identify the motherboard components, regardless if they say they have been updated that's only for new processors, so windows can identify the components and chipset and give it proper names in device manager. but as for performance gains from updating them none whatsoever at all.

    Intel Inf

The Intel® Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware.

I did not manually download anything after clean installation, but the yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager disappeared some time after connection was available, so I think Windows automatically downloaded some relevant files.

It does but typically they are not the full driver from the manufacturer. It's better to manually download the main ones such as chipset, graphics and sound drivers.

That's not entirely true. Some of these files do contain drivers.
When you experience trouble revert to what's been tested by the manufacturer of your motherboard.
More recent chipset drivers/inf files are backwards compatible up to a point and some also correct for known issues.

    Hi,

It's in the release notes that accompany version 10.1.2.85 (server) and probabably .84 as well:

"All Chipset INF versions are set back to 1970 (to avoid unforeseen issues such as recently found SMBus issue)"

    Cheers,

noticed this with the Asrock.inf for chipset, not with the latest OEM chipset.
    (the date 1970 i mean)

also the smbus uses the MS driver.
you can manually swap it in device manager for the INTEL after loading the chipset setup.

    same with DRAM controller.

    Hi,

It mostly affects systems running Skylake cpus and accompanying chipsets.

    Cheers,
