Problem with external hard drive not working with USB 3.0 on Windows 1

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me, i have a Lenovo Ideapad 510 laptop with windows 10 64bit. The laptop is only about 3 months old.

    It has 2 x USB 3.0 slots and 1 x USB 2.0.

I have recently bought a USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure and i can only connect it to the USB 2.0 port.

If i connect it to either of the USB 3.0 ports the drive appears in my computer but doesnt show the space etc, also my laptop will sometimes either eventually say device not recognised or my laptop will just freeze and i cannoy move my mouse etc, even unplugging the drive doesnt unfreeze it and i have to force restart the laptop.

The device manager doesn't show any problems and all drivers appear to be installed fine.

I tried removing the usb host controller from the list but it wouldn't actually uninstall, it just kept showing as a progress bar showing it was trying to remove it but i left it for around 10 mins and it was still doing it so again i just force restarted the laptop..

I cannot seem to find what the issue might be, can anyone please help?

    Regards

    James

You may need a powered hub if it did not come with the cable with two ends to plug into two USB ports.

Sometimes those power supplies do not work as they should.

    • Check Lenovo website for your exact model if any BIOS update
    • Use Lenovo site to also reinstall the latest chipset drivers
    • Have you verified the enclosure works on another PC?
    • Check your warranty dates in case you need return it

    /* EDIT */
Also try turning off Selective Suspend

If it was a Power issue (not enough of it) the drive wouldn't work on a USB 2.0 port either. USB 3 can supply more current that a USB 2 port. Plus the drive is self powered. I don't know what the issue is but IMHO its not due to a lack of power to the drive.

    Hi there

I had a USB3 drive that Windows didn't see at all - until I plugged it into a Non Powered Anker USB 3 4 port hub !!!! - then it worked immediately. Go Figure !!!!!

I tried on all the other USB 3 ports - same thing - but plug that silly Anker USB3 hub in - Bingo.

Seems silly to use a Hub when that's the only device.

Incidentally same problem on NAS - the HDD would connect for around 10 mins before "going AWOL". Use that Anker Hub -- Magic.

Can't for rhyme or reason fathom it out. However the Anker USB 3 hub is a tiny piece of kit so no problems keeping it.

The USB HDD is powered with a Hefty power supply so that's not a problem.

Not the cheapest but this has worked 100% with ANY USB2 / 3 device I've ever connected to it

-- I'm getting another one. Some Hubs haven't worked etc etc but I can definitely vouch for this one -tried on 3 different computers with different mobos , different OS'e etc and absolutely no problem with the HDD "going missing".

"The Wonders and Mysteries of Windows !!!!!" Fathoming it all out will probably take longer than the expected life of the Universe.

    cheers
