Windows 10 Won't Install HP Printer?

I've had this problem for about a week now.

It says this in Windows Update:
"There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:
    • HP - Printers - HP Officejet H470 series - Error ******"

I've tried rebooting the laptop, but I keep getting that error no matter what I try...

I know that the driver is available from HP's website, but I'd like to get this issue fixed as I believe it's a Windows 10 related problem.

I have 1607 installed and it will not work with my HP LaserJet 1018. HP says to go to MS. MS - Huh.

I've noticed that some OEM/equipment builders are providing drivers to Microsoft and not making them available from themselves, kinda "passing the buck".

The manufacturer will usually have the latest driver on it's web page, not in Windows Update. Just download the driver from HP. HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP(R) Customer Support

I know, but I'd like to get it from Windows Update if possible and not from HP.

    Hi there

That's not always possible - due to licensing, proprietary considerations, copyright issues or technical "secrets" - so Ms can't always get Manufacturers drivers or provide an alternative generic driver.

In general though if hardware manufacturers want to sell products it makes good sense for them to supply Windows drivers -- however sometimes Ms can't always get the latest drivers.

As far as HP is concerned most drivers will work on W10 if you use the W8 ones - or failing that W12 SERVER drivers will generally work on W10. W12 server is later than W8 so more likely to be W10 compatible.

    Cheers

Some older printers only have drivers included with Windows or by Windows Update.

There are drivers for the H470 at the Microsoft Update Catalog, but I only see X86 (32 bit) ones. Are you running Win 10 X64? That's an essential piece of information, which you should have provided.

As HP provides Windows 10 drivers for the printer, I recommend that you use them. I don't understand your unwillingness to download and install them; even if Windows Update had installed drivers, the HP ones might unlock more features than the WU ones would provide. (Maybe at the cost of more complexity.)

I have several HP printers and several PCs running Win10, and in ALL cases, the drivers from HP provided superior reliability and functionality over the stuff that MS installed for the printers.

You should use the HP drivers and software, not MS.

The reason I am unwilling to download the HP drivers: Go there and they say they don't have any - use MS.

When I went to 1607 on that machine I had the last drivers HP provided.

I will go back and check to make sure MS did not overwrite what I had.

Right now I am working on the 13th or 14th attempt to get a Win 10 machine to 1607 and I have another printer on the network.
