Keyboard & Mouse won't wake PC from sleep

Up until recently, I have either put my laptop to sleep or let it go to sleep at the end of the day. The next morning I would hit either the mouse or keyboard (probably mostly the esc key just because it's sort of prominent at the corner). Some time recently, I haven't been able to wake up the machine this way. It won't wake up until I lift the cover.

As far as I know, I haven't changed any settings.

The settings for both keyboard and mouse have Allow this device to wake the computer checked in Device Manager.

    Laptop Model: HP 15t-J100
originally 8.1 pro upgraded to win10 last july.

While not my best suggestion, have you tried restoring your power plan to defaults, shutting down, power on, set power plan to your preferences and see if behavior changes.

not exactly, but I do restart regularly (i.e. shutdown -r). Don't have hibernate enabled so no fast starts to confuse me. And I did restore defaults at one point but then changed stuff without a cold boot.

I will give that a try as I know that sometimes settings do get messed up and turning them on/off one or more times sometimes get them back on track. But I don't have a lot of hope on this as a solution. Worse come to worse I guess I'll let the monitor turn off, same for the HD but not let it sleep.

    Try running the Power Troubleshooter?

You might need to look in the BIOS for this option. Setting from Device Manager is not enough. Here's an example of my BIOS. There's a wake up option where you set up which device to trigger wake up. From the screen shot, I set my keyboard to wake up (also need to set USB since my Keyboard connected to a USB port)

tried that. the only thing it did was change a couple items (for ex dim the display sooner) for presumably more energy savings.

don't have anything like that in bios. This HP bios is the most limited i've ever seen. I can't even tell the machine to self start in the morning. Can't do anything with S0-S5 settings. The only USB is boot (e.g. can boot from a usb device yes/no) and an option to configure whether initial boot is usb2 or 3.

going to try the reset to default then cold boot later as suggested by Caledon Ken

well I tried the set power to defaults followed by a cold shutdown / restart. Thought that did it but either that did not solve the problem or the problem is back.

It seems that I can wake up if sleeping for a short period of time. For example, if I press the 'sleep' key and let it go to sleep, I can wake up after waiting a minute. But last night, I pressed the 'sleep' key and this morning had to open the cover. Going to experiment more and try to come back with better data.

Would be interesting to run powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to confirm keyboard / mouse are listed. They must be or it wouldn't wake on naps.

You might also try forcing issue with powercfg /deviceenablewake followed by devicename listed in above command for keyboard.

Have a look at powercfg commands.

I would create restore point before /deviceenablewake , should you try, just so you can restore if needed.

    yes they are there.

    C:\Windows\system32> powercfg /devicequery wake_armed
    HID Keyboard Device
Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical (Mouse and Keyboard Center) (002)

I found an MS article that spoke to a similar problem with the last build. But that fix didn't work either.

In doing all this I had the laptop lid up a lot. It does seem to always wake up from the laptop keyboard or touchpad. It's just the USB mouse/keyboard.

I"ve decided go do a system restore and be done with it ( I hope)

Well I tried everything here as well as a couple ideas from searching the MS site and nothing has solved this problem. I was beginning to think that I was crazy and this never worked.

In desperation I decided to restore back to 8.1 pro. I was never that happy with win10 anyway. Particularly the inability to control monthly updates (although it doesn't bother me on desktops sitting in the basement that I RDP in to ). Only took an hour or two. I have almost all personal stuff on an "I" drive so I just saved that to an external drive, restored to the 8.1 backup done just prior to the win10 upgrade and copied back the "I" drive. Of course there were a couple things I forgot like I have a "bin" directory on the system drive that had a couple updates. But those several items were easily restored by attaching the VHD file from the backup made on win10 right before the restore.

Anyway I'm happy to report my keyboard and mouse now wake the laptop up just fine. So I've actually shortened the time to go in to sleep mode and am back to flicking the escape key as I sit down. But thx for the suggestions and help.
