    New RAID disk after crash: how to check if the data is mirrored

    Hey everyone, I'm new here so pardon any rookie mistakes. I've searched the forum carefully, but couldn't find the answer.

    Situation: RAID with two 4tb hdds, one hdd crashed just after 6 months of working. Replaced with a new one today.

    Question: how to check if the data is being transfered from one hdd to another right now? Any software that can show process of mirroring at real time?

    How was the RAID 1 set up? What motherboard do you have? Which SATA ports are the drives connected to?

    It was setup by computer technician, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question about how it was setup. I could check for info if it's available under some properties tab.
    Motherboard: Asus Z87-K;
    Bios tells me that SATA ports 1 and 2 is occupied by RAID hdds.

    Hi there

    easy way first -- Windows (File) explorer should show just 1 HDD.

    Now since you had an HDD failure chances are that most of the data will be on the original HDD that didn't fail -- so the best way IMO is to back this up tro say an external device, re-format the HDD (Windows will only show 1 HDD), and then copy the data back to the HDD.

    The RAID 1 hardware should re-distribute the data creating the striping / index etc etc.
    Unless you have things like LED's to indicate individual HDD usage I'm not sure if there's any easy way of seeing if mirroring is being done properly --I suspect it is though.

    Cheers

    Hi, Jimbo, I've already connected everything back to it's places. All the data was in the hdd that didn't fail. No LEDs on hdd itself. So I guess the only way is to disconnect the new hdd after a couple of days, when info should be already transfered and insert it into another pc in order to check what's on it. Am I right?
