External HDD disappears after a few minutes

    Good afternoon all,

One of my external HDD's disappears after a few minutes; this only started happening since I upgraded to Windows 10.

It will show up again after unplugging and plugging it in again, but again only for a few minutes.

Here is what I have done so far:

    1. Tried both USB 2 and USP 3 ports.
    2. Disabled the automatic power off in power management.
    3. Tried running the HDD on my laptop (a Mac), where it just works fine.
    4. It will not show up in the disk management so I cannot reassign another drive number.
    5. I checked in the device manager if there were any issues but everything seems fine.

So briefly, I have run out of options and would be very thankful for any help.

    Best regards,

    Hanno

Hi, many issues with external (and even internal) drives have been reported in the context of Win 10.
Here's a small sample of posts. See if they give you any suggestions, then post back. Feel free to search for more.

I am beginning to wonder if these problems tend to correlate with certain manufacturers' drives. For example, I've not seen Toshiba mentioned.. which I use and with which I've had no problems - yet.

The majority seem to be Seagate drives so it's possible the problems correlate to certain manufacturers' drives.
