It actually works as all it does is Windows will trim drive when you run it, mines doesn't run automatically even though it's supposed to. You should also do the "winsat formal" to make sure the SSD is setup properly with Windows. I mean Samsung Magician even specifically states "Standard mode uses TRIM to improve performance." as seen below in the screenshot.

If optimization damaged the SSD ... a long time ago, at least three years I would have seen it
TRIM does not damage SSD's since it's for SSD's only. My TRIM never runs for some reason even though it's supposed to run weekly. As stated previously in the thread, I do have bad sectors on the SSD after 1.5 years but it's less than 1MB so hopefully it's not a issue.
