What are the temps of your drive since that makes a difference since I think you have way more cooling and airflow than my system which is a laptop that is running the drives at 60C not 60F which does put a lot of stress on the drive.
I can't compare process per process with you, I'm just telling you my drive has no issues. And none of my temps are nowhere near 50, let alone 60c. With that, your issue may simply be solved by having it replaced under warranty.

    Good luck.

    Hello,

Is this on your ASUS G74SX? The 60 °c is too much (No need to worry about temperature on G75V)

The Samsung manufacturer's maximum temp is 70 °

Certainly, 60 ° for an SSD, it is less serious than for a DD ... but this is however very high

Did you update the driver ?
Yes, this is on the G74SX-3DE with 32GB of RAM. You're right, that is why I am saying 60C is a really high temperature and puts stress on the SSD itself. Obviously someone kept missing the point that working hard in a cool environment is not as bad as working hard in a environment that is almost at the upper limits of the operating range listed in the specification of the drive.
I think this is because the hard drives sit right below the nVidia GeForce GTX 560m which runs hot and while the pictures all show vents on the entire backside of the system, the left side is cold since it does not actually circulate air but all the heat actually goes out the right side of the machine. The other reason is due to moving 8 years ago and upcoming remodeling plans, I am using my big Mark Levinson amplifier cardboard box which actually sits on the floor as a table that the notebook sits directly on top of so perhaps I need to put some kind of board between the top of the box and the notebook.

As for the driver, as mentioned earlier, 12.x is the latest driver that supports the ICH6 mobile chipset so there is no update available.

That's what I mean, the environment is different since you're on a desktop platform which has way lower temperatures. Not on this machine but on a Dell Inspiron 8200 and IBM ThinkPads, the latest and greatest capacity had never lasted long in a 24x7x365 environment. 14.1GB 7200rpm IBM TravelStar 2.5" lasted exactly 3 weeks in 1997. 60GB IBM TravelStar 7200RPM died after a year or two. Seagate 160GB 7200RPM died after 2 years. The only reliable 7200RPM drives are the pair of Western Digital Blue 750GB drives which was what the Samsung 850 Pro replaced. I don't need to get the drives replaced under warranty since being a Samsung shareholder, they will send me new shrinkwrap drive(s) in advance and I just have to use Macrium Reflect Server edition and clone the old drive(s) to the new drive(s). No one answer my other question, where is the diagnostics in Samsung Magician or what can I use to show how many bad blocks the drive has? Thanks!

There is no diagnostics in Magician. It's not like there's hundreds of tabs there so if you didn't see it, it isn't there.

Environments aside, I still maintain your drive shouldn't be doing what it's doing - developing bad sectors in such a short period of time. And if it was a "workload" issue, we'd all have them since many of us constantly run benchmarks as well as the daily use of them. In short, I'm not buying into the "environmental difference" argument.

Anyway your solution is simple as far as I see it... RMA the drive.

    Good luck.

The software is asking you to update the Intel IRST drivers - Downloads for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST). The latest version is 15, you're still running 12. See if updating helps.
    Let us know.
    Hello,

Under W8.1 it also stuck for the drivers.

    Intel 14.5.0.1081

Well, it can not work. It freezes the startup ... Bravo Samsung ... (starts to irritate me there!) ( Driver Raid if I read well)

This, the more the Over Provisioning incoherent does much!

PS: I just opened an incident ticket at Samsung.

They are already aware of the problems. They advise to go back to version 5 or even 4.9.7

    hi guys,

because of the security problem in older versions of magician, its required to uprade to the latest version 5.1
the bad thing is that the software does not support silent/unattended install. so how can i upgrade multiple clients at once?

What I meant was every storage manufacturer has diagnostic tools that they have for download so you run it to determine if the drive is bad before they do the RMA, Samsung should have something similar to SeaTools which is Seagates version.

Actually, there are a total of 68KB of bad sectors so it's just a small amount according to the last chkdsk fix as it is even smaller than a 5.25" low density 360k floppy disk. Even SSD's will relocate the blocks around. Higher temperatures are known to make drives die easier. Why else do you think people have cooling in desktops to keep the drives cool since 60C is very hot for drives in general. It's the law of physics that can't be changed. SSD is a form of memory and even with memory, people have heatspreaders for a reason to help get rid of the heat. It's easy to prove the theory is correct or wrong, buy identical drives, put one in a environment that runs at your standard temperature and then put one that runs at 60C and run them exactly the same way by actually using the drives, you will see if there is a problem or not. Whether you buy in the "environmental difference" or not doesn't matter because how many people in this thread are actually running it on a Gaming 17.3" laptop which is a extremely hot machine, even my AC Adapter is hotter than the computer that it can almost burn the hands already. It's comparing apples to oranges. If you were running it in a performance/gaming notebook environment, then that would be a valid comparison. Google "Samsung 850 Bad Sector" and you will see many people have bad sectors with their SSDs and SSDs do fail. Your many of "us" is talking about less than probably 10 persons in reality and not the entire SSD using population which would be a more valid comparison. Besides, buying a HD is luck of the draw. It's called a MTBF for a reason as that's just the average, doesn't mean every drive will last that long while some may last longer. Google "can heat kill SSD" and it will tell you how the hotter the environment, the higher the risk is. Besides that, I asked the question and you were the only one who responded saying you didn't have bad sectors, since when did one person represent the entire population of this thread alone. Even Cliff S who was the one who got me into SSD's has not said a thing yet.

I don't need to RMA the drive since I just wait for a new pair of drives to be shipped and then it's the hassle of having to clone the drive and then taking it to FedEx/UPS using their pre-paid shipping label which is the hassle as I don't drive and have to take public transportation. I don't even have to worry about the warranty either because I have a lifetime warranty, as long as Samsung is still around and they don't sell their SSD to someone else like they did with their spinners to Seagate.

    Samsung Magician Freezes On Run

I have read most of this thread and updated my System Specs...I am simply trying to get Samsung Magician to run and not freeze at "Scanning for Disks". I have an EV) 960 500GB installed as my boot disk and just bought a 960EVO 1TB to put in the other SSD slot and was planning to use Acronis to move replicate my boot drive to there then use the 512GB SSD for Lightroom catalogs and X-Plane 11 for fast R/W.
The 500GB SSD work fine, but is using a Windows driver I think...When I run Samsung Magician version 5.1 from here Tool & Software | Download | Samsung V-NAND SSD it either fails to start or it opens the small black screen in center of monitor and says "Scanning Disks" but just sits there frozen....
Do I NEED Samsung Magician? Should I drop to an older version? Link?
    Thanks!

    Hi,

I don't see much use for Samsung Magician on 960 NVMe drives. Try replacing MS driver with Samsung's latest driver.

    Updating Driver

Thanks for that...I tried updating the driver before, but didn't read the instructions closely enough I suppose. In the directions here http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...uide_Rev22.pdf

...they note in section #3 that to check if it installed properly look at the Storage Controllers driver (not DRIVES)..."
If “Samsung NVMe Controller” is shown below the “Storage controllers” as below, the installation is successful.!Anyway, I verified that and gave it one more try to run Magician and it worked fine. Now on to learning about optimization and installing the 1TB 960EVO and moving my c: drive over...
