Yes, it works similar to HHDD's but without the SSD size limitation. Interesting to those people using massive HDD volumes I suppose.Interesting, VeloSSD seems to be using the SSD's as a cache for the spindle HDD's and not actually to make the SSD's faster.
Then there's also their MaxVeloSSD software which uses DRAM as a cache as well allowing for speeds well beyond that of a SSD.
SSDfresh explains pretty much what it does and, like I said. item #3 (the services) you can disable them manually yourself.
