Thanks, Cliff. Grabbed the file from your OneDrive share. Much-appreciated! Kari says you helped him troubleshoot an activation issue with his recent 17074 meltdown. Thanks for that, too! ;-)

[NOTE: for those who might not be able to grab Magician 5.2.0 from Cliff's OneDrive link which expires on 1/17/18, it's available at MajorGeeks now on their "What's New" page for today. Here's that link: Samsung SSD Magician 5.2. Unlike Cliff's link, this one has no expiration date that I know of. HTH!

I didn't see any real performance gains using Magician 5.1 or earlier versions, so I didn't bother with it.
I'll have to give this software another try, to see if I notice anything.
Thanks you guys, for providing the download links. Samsung Magician-thumbsup_46x51.png

It's not about performance gains for me, it's about keeping the SSD controllers firmware updated.
With, all the ongoing work Microsoft is doing with Windows 10, and the changes they make to the kernel, and BIOS updates because of the latest security threats, it is important to keep your SSDs firmware updated, doubly so, if you use encryption.

To Cliff's post (#895) about keeping software and firmware current, I can only say "Amen!" I'd also like to observe that, for whatever reason, even after a new Magician version comes out, previous versions continue to blithely assert they're up-to-date. I think his point is that the only safe way to get the most current firmware is to be running the most current software. I endorse this proposition, too!

    I guess I'm a bit confused?
Is the Magician program considered firmware; I thought that firmware was something different?

No, you're right: Magician is software. But it uses built-in intelligence to talk to Samsung servers to find out about (and manage updates to) firmware. Because older versions of the program appear to be WRONG about being current, it's not unreasonable to speculate that they might also be wrong about firmware, too. I strongly believe that's why @Cliff recommended users keep Magician current, and why I went on to endorse his recommendation myself. Does that make things any clearer? Gosh! I hope so. Thanks for asking,

My question is, can I still have up to date firmware for my Samsung SSD, without having to install this software?
Or does the firmware update depend on having this program installed?
Another question is, if I install Magician and disable it from starting. Will this hinder any of the firmware, or maybe I have it all wrong about what this program is and isn't?

To update the firmware without Magician is a PITA, as you need to create a boot disk to do it.
