    Hi,

After such a FW update the system needs a power on/off cycle for the update to be activated.

    Hi,

I disagree that it has been clarified before. A possible work around has been offered. Not a solution.

Understand the comment on starting a new thread . . . that could apply to several recent discussions.
I think you don't quite understand the issue. What solution do you expect other than having Windows install itself to a smaller partition so you have some space left for overprovisioning? Which I stress you should not really need on a home system in the first place assuming a SSD that's relatively current ?

The only thing you're going to do is deprive yourself of quite a bit of usable disk space that's all.
Just don't fill up your disk to the nook with data and that's all there's to it. Don't buy all that BS on the net please. There are far more knowledgeable on this forum than even MS can hire.

I agree I might not fully understand the concepts at play here which is why I sought advice on this forum. However, I have 25% of my 950 Pro 512 SSD free. I don't consider it crammed full.

No offense, but Samsung seems to think over provisioning is recommended so much so that it is a distinct recommendation in their documentation and dedicated feature of their software. For now, until I need to reclaim the space, I'll use OP. Can't hurt.

    Hi,

I'm aware of that but leaving unused partitioned spaced on the drive achieves the same thing. The drive's controller knows it has empty cells available and that's all it needs. Hence my comments in my previous posting.

    Hi,

Further to this, an excerpt from Samsung's own documentation:

In addition to the benefits of OP, this technology reduces user accessible space. Therefore, under a light workload in a client PC application, users don’t need to set additional OP space. However, under a heavy workload (for example, a server, data center or heavy workload client PC applications), a minimum of 6.7% OP is recommended and over 20% and even 50% is being used. Different OP ratios are recommended depending upon usage applications and the workload.

    Hi,

When you launch Magician it will tell you. As far as I know there have been no FW updates for that model at this point.

    Here's a listing:

Your source is from a 2014 Samsung For Data Centers guide.

I am not at a data center, nor do I have the type of SSD mentioned in that guide: 845DC Pro and the 845DC EVO.

I might add that the comments you quoted do not appear in the current Samsung Magician installation guide or the 950/960 Pro guide.

    You left this part out:

    2. Why is OP important?
OP has a direct effect on the SSD's random performance as the drive is filled with data. Guaranteeing free space to accomplish the NAND management tasks (GC, wear-leveling, bad block management) means the SSD does not have to waste time preparing space on demand, a process that requires additional time as data is copied, erased and recopied. An added benefit is that OP makes all of the SSD maintenance procedures more efficient, reducing the Write Amplification Factor (WAF) by ensuring there’s room to work, which improves the SSD’s lifetime.
The below table is from internal test results that show the benefits of OP in performance and lifetime.
[Table. 1] Sustained performance and lifetime comparison by OP ratio (4 KB random write)
This test is based on internal test results that can vary depending on the test environment.

    OP ratio
Sustained performance (4 KB random write)
    Lifetime (4 KB random write) 0% OP (512 GB) 7 K IOPS 1 6.7% OP (480 GB) 13 K IOPS X 2.09↑ 28% OP (400 GB) 27 K IOPS X 5.22

As I mentioned, it can't hurt. Cheers

    Hi,

It does not matter what the source is, an SSD is an SSD.
Naturally you can do as you please but you'll have to shrink the size of your system drive. What you can try is disable the page file.
Reboot, try to schrink c: so you can apply the amount of OP you'd like to have and then renable the page file again.

    Cheers,
