Cliff, I would like to point out that Tutorial was written about 7 years ago. At that time it was probably 1st and 2nd generation SSDs. They have come a long way since then. It may still"Lie" to the OS, I don't know, but much has changed since then. Many of the tutorials you read about SSD optimization were written around the same time. SSDs are much more hardy and robust now and many of the optimizations are no longer necessary.

I won't proclaim to be an SSD expert, but I have to go with Steve in that things have changed a lot over the years. Today's OS knows and understands they'll probably be running SSD's as hard drives, so I'm not sure what "lie" is being told now?

I could see this with Windows 7, but newer OS's expect SSD's.
Do some searching for Flash Translation Layer (FTL)

    Hi,

Sure. What's meant is that the OS has no clue as to where the files are physically on the SSD. The controller translates it into a format that the OS can use. Any OS that is.

    Cheers,
    Correct, thanks

I called Samsung and the tech said that HE would turn off Rapid mode before a f/w update.

Totally agree. Especially since this was addressed a few pages back. Not trying to be funny but this isn't rocket science.

OK. I update firmware all the time, but this one has me concerned. IF it fails, then the system is dead 'til Samsung can give me an RMA. I will do a Marcium full image first but my concern is sending the drive back to Samsung with the data on it.
Anyway, "cover me, I'm going in".

If you've updated firmware in the past then this is no different and may be even easier. Just let Magician do its thing.

Oh, and just to be sure, if your PC is on battery, I'd make sure the PC is fully charged or put it on AC power. I'd advise this with any firmware update, especially a BIOS so this is nothing unique to "Samsung".

    Hi,

If you're that concerned about sensitive data, secure erase the drive first, then update the FW. By you're own saying you're already five updates behind. A lot of updates for any drive by all means really.

    Anywho, best of luck.

Well, I did think of that but Samsung said that by LAW they remove all data before trying to fix any drive.
