Just to expand on what I meant by lying, this is where I found out about it, when I was getting ready to by my first SSD years ago:
So How does the SSD work with current and past hardware and operating systems without the need for 'magic' expensive upgrades?
Simply put, the first job of the SSD controller is to lie its butt off! Really! Here are the lies the controller must tell in order to work:
1: It has to tell your BIOS and motherboard "Don't mind me, I'm just a plain old fast hard drive. you can boot from me and use me!"
2: After the hardware accepts the SSD, the SSD controller has totell the same lie to the operating system which is used to performing input and output to specific blocks on a hard drive. Basically, the operating system is fooled into thinking it is in full control of where on the SSD the data is going, since it has always had control in the past on normal hard drives. There is a lot of logic involved in this, so the controller has its own processor and basic operating system (firmware).

FDEgrove - have you ever checked Magician speed test with and without OP? Wondering, besides that Samsung says it helps the life of the SSD if it does anything for speed.

Cliff, doing some self help and found this - will try it first - of course, because it is the easiest.

Makes sense to me that one of these files might be in the way.

    Hi,
@kentjapan: OP has nothing to do whatsoever with access times or perceived speed in general. All it is is empty space on the drive. Most modern ssd's already contain an invisible part of the drive to serve OP needs.
View OP as a spare set of memory cells the controller can use in case some cells wear out or are damaged in some way.

    Cheers,

Cliff, I would like to point out that Tutorial was written about 7 years ago. At that time it was probably 1st and 2nd generation SSDs. They have come a long way since then. It may still"Lie" to the OS, I don't know, but much has changed since then. Many of the tutorials you read about SSD optimization were written around the same time. SSDs are much more hardy and robust now and many of the optimizations are no longer necessary.

The controller does still needs to lie.
I keep up on the latest SSD stuff, and, yes I know, on newer OS's, be it Windows, a Linux distro, or even the devils Mac, you don't need to modify the OS at all, for an SSD.

I won't proclaim to be an SSD expert, but I have to go with Steve in that things have changed a lot over the years. Today's OS knows and understands they'll probably be running SSD's as hard drives, so I'm not sure what "lie" is being told now?

I could see this with Windows 7, but newer OS's expect SSD's.

Quick question about updating my firmware on my 850 PRO from EXM01B6Q to EXM04B6Q. Everyone says to use my new Magician 5.1 and let it update the firmware and not to bother using the bootable ISO version. I did see on an old Samsung post that the Firmware update will not work with Rapid Mode enabled. Is that true or not? Should I turn off rapid mode first?

I'm not real sure what you have to do, but I would turn it off. It's no trouble turning it off and back on. Just click a button and reboot.

Sure. What's meant is that the OS has no clue as to where the files are physically on the SSD. The controller translates it into a format that the OS can use. Any OS that is.

Great...better safe than sorry. I guess they do suggest that you use Magician.
