The SSD controller uses the space internally as part of TRIM.

Interesting read, but I don't see how it can read and write to an unallocated space. They never mention Unallocated in the article. I don't have Magician installed. I didn't see a need for it. I never saw a difference with or without it. When I had it installed it said it was going to make an unallocated work space. I was just going to make a partition and wipe it. I don't know if that will work or not.
With SSDs partitioning is only an Operating system thing. The SSDs controller is what is in charge of reading & writing. It chooses where data is written, and with NAND cells there is no physical partition.

The controller basically "Lies" to the OS as to where data is stored.

When you create a partition with an SSD, you reserve a specific number of NAND cells, and not a position( starting from the outside(where seek times are faster) of the disk to the inside(where they are slower) like a hard disk).

This is also one of the reasons not to "defragment" an SSD, as the data is not where the OS "thinks" it is.

Thanks for the replies. Is the SSD controller part of Windows OS or part of Magician? If I create the partition manually myself will that work? Does it have to be unallocated or formatted?

The controller is in the SSDs firmware, not magician, all SSDs have them(some better than others). See: SSD Controller | StorageReview.com - Storage Reviews

If you create the partition yourself, it is the same thing as what Magician does, unallocated space to move data around in, when garbage collecting.

The thing is if you do not fill up your disk over 90% and have formatted it completely, it's ok too.

The idea with Unallocaterd space is that you can't use it and the system can't see it

Think of it as the extra space that you need to leave on a spinner(HDD) so it can defragment, if you fill a HDD up or almost all the way up, it cannot defragment, right?

    Thanks Cliff S. I created a 23GB Unallocated Partition.

Very informative article, but neglects to mention that the TLC NAND used in the Evo and Pro lines lacks the performance of MLC and the OP is also used to treat OP located TLC as MLC to improve performance.

The Samsung Pro line uses MLC, not TLC.

Read the article and this is over my head. Getting a SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE256BW next week. What do I need to do to make this last longer, run at top performance. Will the Unallocated Partition store deleted files?, any suggestions are welcome. Some time I'm a little slow on learning stuff, but want to understand how it all works. Just want to set it up the right way out of gate.

    Thanks Z

I stand corrected. I should have said the Evo. That's why the pro-doesn't have to have an OP. Thanks
