I'm not sure I understand. Do I need to move the unallocated space to the end of the drive, after Q:/?

Just a suggestion. Think CountMike is agreeing.

For what it's worth: I do not have any unallocated space on my both SSDs and yet Samsung Magician allows OP on both of them (with 10% being default suggested size).

It always places it at the end of disk so I guess it's where it should be. 10% is more than enough although many including me eliminated it altogether.

Okay, so the placement of the unallocated space doesn't appear to be the issue, which leaves me with my original problem - why can't OP read the volume information?

Originally, I didn't have any unallocated space and still had the OP problem. That's why yesterday I tried shrinking the C:/ partition by 10% but it sounds like it's not necessary.

Is the option greyed out or do you get an error?

That would appear to be likely. It seems that Magician will only let you allocate OP from the last partition on the drive, there's no way to choose any other partition. Your 'Q: Data' at 12.12GB seems to be too small for Magician to use as OP. My 860 EVO has a larger D: Data partition, with the unallocated OP positioned after it.

If you look at my original screen shot one page back Samsung Magician you'll see that the option is not greyed out. It scans the drive but results in the "Unable to get volume information" error message.

Not necessarily, OP is placed prior to my recovery partition:
