cd/dvd shows in Dev Mgr but not Dic Mgr or Explorer

    Hi
    New to the forum.
Have recently taken the step in to the 21st century. Loaded Win 10 Pro 64 on to a cleared desktop. Am still running XPsp3 on my main m/c as it works and I have been very reluctant to upgrade!
After a promising start where things seemed to go smoothly and Win10 did it all I have been struggling with 2 basiuc problems.
1 the dvd does not show in explorer or disc management but it does show in device manager.
2 the machine is reluctant to join a wired home network with my existing XP machine.

I have trawled the net extensively on both topics and just spent hours looking at threads on these subjects that are dated years ago (eg 2016 on problem 1 above).

Windows vers is 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1165).

Have tried a number of the solutions offered in the forum but have not solved the problem.

    Any help greatly appreciated
    John

Usually a driver issue. Is there a yellow warning triangle in Device Manager? What is the make and model of this PC? Is it the one in your specs, or is that the XP machine? Try looking for a driver on the manufacturer's support site.

2 the machine is reluctant to join a wired home network with my existing XP machine.

XP uses only SMB 1.0, and by default that is disabled in Windows 10. You need to turn on 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Client' for a Windows 10 PC to be able to see and use shares on an XP machine, and 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Server' if you also want the XP machine to have access to shares on the Win10 PC.

Turn Windows Features On or Off in Windows 10

With SMB 1.0 enabled on the Win10 PC it should work, as it does here for this XP virtual machine:

    Try the suggestions here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...other-programs

If this doesn’t work try this fix by Kapil Arya:

    Try these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

    2. Type the following command and hit Enter key:

    reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot. Insert a disk to test and the optical or DVD drive should be visible now.

Thanks for the response. Made changes you suggested on Win 10 for the network problem. Went back to network basics on both machines and all seeks to be working.
I will address he dvd now and find the driver.
    Thanks

Hi neither issue firmly resolved as yet.
this is now on back burner until I solve an Office 2016 pro problem.
