I updated to 8514 and have been listening to music for a couple of hours. If I had a way to describe this version (at least how it sounds on my PC and setup), I'd say it's fuller. Could be the best update so far, imho. Everyone has their opinion of course, but this is my 2 cents.

but we can't use that method with updates from MCU (the smaller ones) right?
nope - can't use small UAD driver updates from MUC - you need the 140Mb HDA ones but are not always available if you choose to continue to use HDA drivers instead of switching to UAD drivers

but I just thought of something and it recently worked. On my friend's ASUS M5A78L-M LE/USB3 board, I installed the traditional Realtek HDA drivers thru the HDXRT.INF file instead of the HDXRT4.INF file, which seem to have a different effect; the ICESound service files do not get installed nor get registered. when running the realtek driver setup program (setup.exe), I either rename or delete the hdxrt4.inf file (for me I rename hdxrt4.inf to hdxrt4.txt) from the WIN64 folder so that the setup program does not use it and chooses the hdxrt.inf file instead.

anyways, the original Realtek audio drivers for that ASUS board (which were early 2015 versions) did not come with the HDART4.inf & HDXRT4.inf files yet (these files were added in late 2015, months after Win10 RTM came out)

so if you are installing newer traditional Realtek HDA drivers thru Device Manager, s0urce, be sure to specify the hdxrt.inf file instead of the hdxrt4.inf file (link to tutorial on choosing a specific INF file in Device Manager)

I just tried pointing device manager to hdxrt.inf but no dice, ICESound is still present on my system (System32 files, registry entry and service). I then tried deleting the hdxrt4.inf and that apparently worked, i don't have the registry entry & service but a file on System32 is still there (ICEsoundAPO64.dll). I made sure to delete them before each installation so it's not from previous install.

8514 is again balanced well over 8509, seems as great as 8504.

6.0.1.8510 and 6.0.1.8514 are both available on MUC...
but, they are both UAD drivers.

ahh (doh! - homer simpson impression), I forgot to tell you to uninstall the Realtek audio drivers first, reboot and then try to re-install the Realtek drivers using the hdxrt.inf file in Device Manager. my bad.

perhaps this is why I always remove/uninstall existing Realtek audio drivers before installing new ones. Otherwise, when installing new drivers repeatedly over old ones in Device Manager, one can end up with old & redundant Realtek HDA drivers that take up a lot of disk space in the Windows driverstore folder - take an example from this guy (he had lots of nVidia drivers & Realtek drivers installed and had to remove the old & redundant ones using DriverStore Explorer)

so my trick does work but requires uninstalling the Realtek HDA drivers first (either thru Programs & Features if the Realtek HD Audio software is listed there OR by selecting it in Device Manager, choose Uninstall but also check the option Delete the driver software for this device), then after restarting the computer re-install them in Device Manager by choosing the HDXRT.INF file.

It looks like I will still use the traditional Realtek HDA drivers on my friend's ASUS motherboard for a few more months. By the time the Win10 v1809 (RS5) release comes out, I will permanently remove those drivers and switch to the newer & smaller Realtek UAD drivers which will allow using the Realtek audio console UWP app from the Microsoft store
