    Guys, I'm worried about your ears.

    Yet again, these drivers all sound the same, if on the same codec/settings. And I am saying this from a room with sound proofing and studio monitors. There's no softer sound on one or another, or fuller bass, or anything of the sort. I tested about 4-5 lossless songs in Ableton Live, genres ranging from rave/techno to indie/britpop, and all these drivers are impossible to distinguish from another to a trained ear.

    It's very puzzling seeing this discussion. I doubt any of you could tell one driver version from another in a blind test.

    softer=better.......???
    Not really. I suggest you should stick with 8491. 8492 seem weaker.

    Maybe their setup introduces variation?

    It's possible, I don't have any 3rd party "extensions" like Nahimic, Maxxaudio, Creative etc. It's just the Realtek chip for me, and while I update drivers, they're all the same. Personally I prefer it this way, as close to the source as possible without any app adding equalizers or any other sound tweaks.

    I was thinking about hardware myself.

    If I may, and no offence...
    but, everyone has their own setup, this includes their preferred settings as well.
    What may sound better to one person, may not be the case for another.
    I also liken it to a piece of artwork: one man's garbage is another man's art.

    Also, your last phrase, “It's very puzzling seeing this discussion. I doubt any of you could tell one driver version from another in a blind test” is a bit offensive. You're judging others' capabilities without knowing them personally. Please refrain from passing judgment on others.

    If you must voice an opinion, you can simply say or query how others are able to hear the differences in quality of sound. You don't have to be so crude.

    Btw, I personally can note a difference between updates. Maybe because I've being playing guitar since I was 6, or have always been in one way or another involved with music. Anyhow, for example, I totally agree with IFPMaximus34 when he states that “the 91 has a weird sizzling sound on end of vocals and a little excessive sharpness”. It's true, and one doesn't need to have a cultured ear or special hearing to realize this... especially when listening to a song.

    Peace

    That comes from working with audio for years, mixing and some mastering as well. I know very well what a human ear can perceive and how deceitful our senses are. It doesn't mean anything bad. It simply means that unless your senses are actually accurate enough to distinguish from things such as these in blind tests, they're not to be trusted. This is a huge discussion based on nothing other than "to me, it feels like". I can't judge it, but I can definitely be skeptical about it and post that.

    Even if you personally are an exception and able to accurately discern something as small as audio driver differences, it's extremely doubtful it's a very spread human trait like one would conclude from this discussion.

    So it's basically impossible for me to not keep being skeptical, considering there's no evidence to suggest I shouldn't be. I mean, senses are hardly our species strength, we're doing pretty bad at everything, smell, vision, hearing. What we have as a strength is imagination and brain power, but all this computation prowess has to deal with the flawed input data we get from our "sensors".
