It isn't your fault. The driver linked in the opening post isn't meant for regular Realtek Onboard Audio but specific intel ones with SST. You can download the 6.0.1.8470 version of the drivers through Microsoft Windows Update catalogue or your manufacturer's website, or google for 6.0.1.8485 set of drivers and download them from elsewhere.
Exactly. Try downloading 6.0.1.8470 and then updating:

They're not that advanced, that's the issue, and can easily deceive you. Any sound engineer will tell you the same. I worked with sound like 5 years ago for a good while, and I kept the gear, including the soundproofing panels in the room and the Yamaha HS80M monitors, but I ditched some of the most costly stuff and some other stuff broke or is no longer compatible with Windows 10, so I'm using the monitors with the integrated Realtek chip, and all of these drivers are pretty much the same, to be honest. There was not one driver that stood out from the pack. This is why I would really love to see a changelog from Realtek, cause there are so many releases it's a bit ridiculous, and the only feature that's worth talking about IMO is the new UWP app and no longer having to download and install 300MB worth of stuff.

I'm sure. But since sound is produced for human listening, it seems letting anything except the primary intended recipient be the ultimate determiner of quality is missing the mark. I can hear differences in some of the drivers, but I admit my years of piano tuning may have caused increased awareness of sound subtleties.

I'm having the same issue with this driver. When I try to set my connected device to a headphone the Realtek HD Audio audio manager does not save my change and gives me the following error: "This device type is not supported!" Also this driver is loud as hell. With the 6.0.1.7727 my Windows volume is at 25, but with the 6.0.1.8470 even volume 10 is too loud.

Try downloading the driver from your system manufacturer's site maybe?

    Ears can easily be fooled.

I once fooled at least nearly 50 people in a single day on a local forum by simply modifying the device name in the driver *.inf in the early Vista era and labeling it as a custom driver package, that had zero improvements in it except for the change in name. But surprisingly, it got feedback like better treble, better bass, etc. and the numbers keep amassing, to the point I felt that if I told them the truth, they'd likely never take me seriously again.

Not saying that people can't discern subtle differences in audio quality, but this perception of subtle or clearly distinguishable improvements in Realtek Audio Drivers with each passing update feels kind of wrong. But that's where it becomes subjective, and if you feel that there's genuine improvement and you're happy with it, I respect that.

Do you compare stuff like CPU overhead, or do they produce subjectively better sound?

what kind of computer are you using, lakatoslaci43? use Speecy to gather the specs of your computer.
the "headphone" output is only featured on some computers (like my cousin's HP Pavilion dv6648se entertainment laptop PC using Realtek ALC268 audio chipset) and not others. his laptop seems to have two separate headphone jacks as I checked myself - also uses Altec Lansing sound strip, so sound quality is good.

volume too loud at 10%? On my brother's Sony VAIO VPCEB laptop the "opposite" is happening; the volume is too soft, even past 50 (blame it on mediocre speaker quality unlike my cousin's HP dv6648se laptop which has much better speakers). plugging nearly any headphone on there the volume is louder than the Sony built-in laptop speakers, even around 20/25.

still no sign of any July 2018 Realtek audio drivers (like 8480 & 8485) on MUC from MS - they seem to have fallen a little behind schedule. MS may post them...eventually.

If you having troubles to get Realtek Audio Control app from Microsoft Store without Realtek UAD drivers, then you can install it with offline package .appxbundle (I previously installed UAD drivers and then successfully installed this app and using application called Fiddler I got this app direct download link (links expire very soon, so I can't share) from Microsoft servers), but I don't guarantee it will work for everyone, because of the Realtek drivers....
Here's the link for Realtek Audio Control /.appxbundle/ from my google drive: RealtekSemiconductorCorp.RealtekAudioControl_1.1.116.0_neutral___dt26b99r8h8gj.AppxBundle - Google Drive

I hope it helps for somebody.
mozilla343, version 1.1.126.0 of the Realtek Audio Control (RtkUWP) app recently came out but I'm unable to grab the link using Fiddler (do I have to use the latest version of fiddler?). I was only able to install this on my HP computer with the 8485 UAD driver with Win10 x64 RS2 v1703.

I was unable to download & install v1.1.126.0 of the Realtek Audio Control app on my other computer using a Gigabyte board using Win10 x64 RS4 v1803 as the MS store kept on giving errors when attempting to download/install the newest Realtek Audio Control app from the MS store (no wonder why the reviews there say that some users were unable to install that app).

can you try to post up v1.1.126.0 of the Realtek Audio Control /.appxbundle download?
the older v1.1.116.0 of the Realtek Audio Control app may not work with more recent UAD driver versions (and may not work with UAD drivers that are too old of course)

Edit 7/20: ah never mind. There's an updated UUP dump of Realtek audio control found here. I just have to download this and rename the cryptic file to Appxbundle and I'll get v1.1.126.0 of the app.

Here is my config. I can set my connected device to a headphone in the Realtek HD Audio audio manager without any issues if I'm on driver version 6.0.1.7727 but it doesn't work with 6.0.1.8470 or 6.0.1.8485.

Yes the volume is too high on 6.0.1.8470 even at 10%, it almost hurts my eyes.
