I suspect what you are saying that I have to restore the backed up partition and then mount it. That's quite different from what I said wouldn't work - accessing the partition backup in the Acronis .TIB file. Acronis provides and access (effectively, a driver) for things like File Explorer, Copy, etc. to access the file images in the backup file, but utilities like DD and RegScanner cannot use this capability. I don't have a spare partition lying waiting to receive a copy of the Acronis backup. But I think I'm about to do a full system restore of that backup anyway so I'll be able to run DD on the live system.

No. I think missing you're missing out on some of Acronis TI's handiest functionality. You don't need to physically restore the partition to access the data. Acronis logically mounts the partition to a drive letter. Then you can access all the data in the partition via the drive letter. You don't need restore the partition first.

I think mount/unmount for TI 2015 and earlier versions was in Tools. For TI 2016, browse to the tib file. Right click Acronis True Image->Mount. Follow the prompts to assign a drive letter. Can take a minute or two to complete depending...

I got my PC from a custom builder that provides good service even for old PCs so I asked them for advice regarding the BIOS update. They suggested against updating the BIOS unless I know it's causing problems. They also suggested I use the driver updates recommended by ASUS for the Z87-A board. (The suggested SATA driver - v14.5.0.1081 - also causes the EventID 225 errors.) The only action common to all recommendations is to try another clean install of Windows. If I'm going to take the time to reinstall again, I might as well first do a restore using my pre-reinstall backup and see what drivers I had back then. Guess I'll be offline for a while.

Oh. Wow! I definitely missed that. I'll give it a try.

Edit: Not so wow. DD gave me the error "The system cannot find the file specified: "system or "system.dat" file."

The capability probably always was their. My not knowing neat capabilities of programs I've use for years is pretty typical. Anyway, I no know multiple ways of listing installed drivers. And I no longer have the performance problem. I bit the bullet and did another clean reinstall of Windows. This time it did not cause a problem. I've taken a very slow approach - testing after every driver update and after almost every program installation. I've still go more pits and pieces to install, but everything seems to be working.

Well that is good news , still no clue on the cause then ?

Now would be a good time to use Macrium Reflect Free and do a Backup, it's working well for me , it even does scheduled backups. Make sure to make the Rescue Disk too (very handy) , Use a CDRW if possible , as it needs to be updated with each version so it can restore images from the latest version. ( no need to pay for TI , if you are)
