Actually their is a way for us to find out ....I think.... We need to ask Pete if Slimware is back on his computer. As we had him remove this last night.

TC their IS one thing simrick wanted Peter to do, and so far it still has not been done. On his free version of Malwarebytes he NEVER checked the Check for Root Kit option <--- He needs to re-run Malwarebytes with that option turned on. :)
Mention that to him when he gets back from the store. MBAM is a <10 min process.

That could be TC ....I'm still a little confused on just what he did from Safe Mode that took 3.5 hours to complete!!!
Me, too. That's why I asked if he remembered the steps.

Or a restore point. But, in any case I can't see why any of it would take 3.5 hours. I think I have used every system restore option there is and none have taken more than 30 minutes max.
He may have done multiple restores, no way of knowing, but that is a very long time, even for a real reset.

He said he ran a scan of MBAM again and it came back clean this time.
It still has to scan again with the root kit enabled.

Let us not forget all of what he is doing is new to him and may be confused as to what he did
and how to explain it to us.

I think he need's to learn how to take screen shot's and show what he is doing.

Peter, you are doing great so far with everything. I am not trying criticizing you at all in a bad way.
You are learning and its what counts.

To the other members actively working this post......

What I'm seeing sounds more like a restore of an earlier system image, not a reset. What do you think?
I think it's a reset. I've done resets on W8 machines, and they remove all installed programs but leave your data. W10 should be the same. The fact that it took so dang long, sounds like a reset to me.

Correct. As I said, Mindspark is a PITA and may show up in a rootkit scan.

    +1

But guys - the OP is not following my method - he's jumped to ESET and skipped the MBAM+Rootkit, the Ccleaner reg clean, etc. Of course, if it is a reset, then all we have to worry about now is *maybe* browser junk.

You're right Computiac, we need screenshot, and logs; an installed programs list from Ccleaner, snips of the Windows Startup entries in Ccleaner, the browser tabs in Ccleaner, etc.
