swarfega actually provided the best answer, he neglected to say You need the chipset driver for your board

Try using the Intel Driver Update Utility
    Intel® Driver Update Utility
Thank you. I tried it and it provided me with an updated driver, but it still did not clear the notification in Device Manager that it was not working. Perhaps I will have to wait for the final release of Windows 10.

Have you tried this? I would do a drive image first if you do decide to try it. Intel Download Center

The intel driver update has not worked. Indeed two patches which seemed destined to cure my problems failed to install. As a result my system is unstable, often freezing altogether, and neither Task Manager nor anything else will unfreeze it, except a drastic long press on the on/off button!

It (SM Buss) is to connect external devices with that buss which you probably do not have so driver for it is not necessary, you can disable it safely.

Thanks, but uninstalling it does not assist. It returns as soon as I restart the computer. If I disable it, would it remain disabled upon a restart? Anyway, until I know what it is supposed to do, I am careful about disabling it in case I mess up the computer.

What Is the SMBus Controller? | eHow

I always have it disabled even with driver working because never had anything to attach to it. Saves a bit on the resources if nothing else. It's mostly used on servers with dual, redundant PSUs and such.
There's no use uninstalling drivers for it because windows will attempt to install them again, if you disable it, it should stay disabled.

You are a genius. Thank you very much, it has solved the problem of those two errant and missing drivers. It seems I no longer have those missing and I hope that will stop the freezing of my computer.
You are a star and I very much appreciate your help.
    Thank you very much

Glad it worked. Having your system specs filled out helps others help you. I posted a pic and link of what was suggested in post #2 after getting the info suggested in post #6. I appreciate the complement but it was a team effort
