    yuk.

EDIT: Oh, and while we're at it, I heard that WD now solder their HDDs onto the pc boards of their external drives. If the PCB in the box fails, you can't open it up and grab your data off the drive anymore. They, as well as HP are off my list.

That is very different than mine. I think you don't want to touch it.

I ran into that with WD awhile back. For some reason things went south. I did manage to recover the data from the drive, but drive, enclosure and all were toast. Since that was the first one I had, I didn't worry about it. I have one WD Passport 500GB, one 500GB Toshiba and one 1TB Toshiba. I wouldn't give you two cents for a Toshiba laptop, but the drives work well.

Toshiba drives are good, but they have really cheapened up their laptops. I wouldn't buy one of theirs either. Although one I have from about 10 years ago is very nice, and running W10 well.

I agree 100%, WHS! :) Although if I can't sell it for at least half of what I have in it, I'll probably try it just for grins. Especially since I've had some experience in tearing into the guts of laptops before. :)

I bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista on it. Upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate and every time I turned around it crashed. So, I paid $100 more and got an HP. Which was good until it croaked. That one even had room for dual drives.

No, they're not soldered on, but they may as well be, what with the requirements. Heretofore, my experience with three HP laptops has been that they had "doors" on the back of the case. You undid four screws, opened the door, unplugged the hard drive and plugged a new one in then put the door back on. It was that simple. Now that has all changed.

I went to Walmart today to see if I could get an HP laptop with the "door", but none of them have those little "doors" for replacing a hard drive. Further, there's no "door" to add more RAM either. Next time I'm in a town with a Best Buy, I'll check to see if what I need is there. I really want a laptop that I can have an SSD in for running Windows 10. Without an SSD, it's slower than molasses in January.

Here's what I was going to post, in the Chillout Room:

I decided it might fit better in the Chillout Room than in Windows Insiders.
It's not just HP. Was recently asked to salvage/upgrade a family member's ASUS X501A laptop which came with Windows 8. Was going to add RAM only to discover that there is no "door" on the bottom. As it turns out, to add RAM or replace the HDD you also have to do a complete disassembly as they are under the keyboard.

I checked with HP before upgrading my last three laptops to SSDs and was told that was fine from a warranty standpoint, other than the warranty wouldn't cover the SSD (which is perfectly understandable).

Even if it wasn't, if your screen dies, as an example, you could just put the old spinner back in. No big deal.

I'm sorry that you're upset about having to remove the bottom panel to get at the RAM, and possibly other components, but to be fair, its been that way for a couple years already for most of the main OEM mainstream systems.

some are great, a lot o fDell systems you only need to do the screws of the back panel, then spudger it off, some need the KB off as well before granting access.

But it's just a new skill, once you have done it a few times it becomes second nature, go further and you can be comfortable getting at anything you need to get at ... :)

I chose this custom laptop - sold by a UK firm which configures them - Clevo chassis, ASUS MBO- partly because virtually the whole back comes off. To clean the fan on my old HP would have been a nightmare.

Plus an extended warranty and freedom in swapping parts, and (comparatively) good ventilation & 4 USB ports, albeit towards the front at the sides.

My old laptop's an HP- the most reliable of the 3 (Dell - 5 years +, several failures, Asus 2.5years, 2 MBO failures, and HP (6 years, now only sometimes bootable - it powers down suddenly sort of randomly).
