    USB to LAN adapter - Shop in Cambridge UK said no such animal !!!!

    Hi there.

    I really was flabbergasted this time -- I think we all know that service in some Computer retail shops is abysmal but visiting Cambridge University to attend some lectures I needed a LAN connection -- my ultra thin laptop only has a fast (AC) wifi adapter.

    Went to local computer store to look for a USB-->LAN connector and was told not that they didn't have one or it was out of stock but absolutely no such piece of equipment exists !!!! from a shop nearby one of the worlds most famous Universities.

    I did get one in the end -- a retail store which I'd never dreamed of in a million years John Lewis - knew what it was but they don't deal in that sort of hardware. The guy selling all those nice huge TV's etc told me - go to Maplins - they have that sort of stuff -- sure enough they did.

    No wonder the Internet is killing off "Physical Stores" if I can only get sensible information from somebody like John Lewis --essentially Kitchen, general furniture etv -- although they do have a small technical dept in their stores.

    Moral of the tale is --never believe what those people in places like Computer World tell you -- they know 100% of NOTHING !!!!!.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo, what a pity you didn't tell me you were in Cambridge, it's my local city. I would be interested to know the name of the first shop you went to. We quite often go to John Lewis but even they cannot compete with the vast choice of online stores like Amazon which stock aw huge collection from all over the world (although they don't have everything).

    There used to be a lot more computer specialised shops in town and indeed I got my first computer in a little street shop.

    Hi there
    @swarfega

    Curry's / PC World on Newmarket Road not far from the Footie ground -- obviously not the best place. !! It has TERRIBLE reviews with which I concur 100% !!!!!. In a University city this store should be SHUT DOWN IMO !!!! Mind you my colleagues at the lectures thought I was BONKERS even thinking of going there -- plenty of I.T stuff in the Cambridge labs which any of the technicians would have given me if I'd have asked for one -- although I'd already got my adapter from Maplins -- actually not a bad store -- all sorts of "Old fashioned" tech stuff you can't see anywhere else these days.

    Next time (I'll be over again around Easter time for another set of lectures) -- if you want to have some "refreshment" in town -- I'll gladly be available -- I'm easily recognizeable (at least people tell me) and always gladly enjoy a visit to a "Local Hostelry"

    Cheers
