If you are referring to Intel Rapid Storage Drivers, the answer is no you do not need them unless you are running Raid. They are Intel's Raid drivers but also contain the Intel AHCI driver. Will you get better performance with AHCI? Many/most people believe you do. They can, in some cases cause problems. I have always used them and have never had problems, but others do.
If your drives work as they are, avoid installing it. I once installed it in a computer and had problems. I used System Restore to fix them.
I used MSAHCI for some time and file transfers were really slow. Then installed Intel RST drivers and file transfer speed multiplied. Z77, Ivy Bridge, SATAIII & II SSD & HDD's.
Is a hit and miss, they don't always work. To make sure nothing goes wrong, on a new clean Windows installation, start with the chipset driver first and then install the storage drive. Likely you won't see any difference, but if you see any issues go in Safe Mode and uninstall it. If everything is OK, create a Restore Point so you can return there in the future. Now continue by installing the graphics drivers and then everything else. Make sure you have configured BIOS before installing Windows. Any change later could give you a BSOD.
