How does one apply the patch if the hard drive cannot start without booting a Linux disk first, and then it only stays booting until it is shut down. The actual Windows Update page for it (in thread below) says you get the patch as a Windows Update with no external download. Meanwhile I've reimaged the drive with Win7 which won't allow the update.

The hdparm tool run from another OS will neither confirm the drive has PUIS or succeed in turning it off. build 9879 bricking drives - Microsoft Community

But if the drives really don't have PUIS why are they symptomatic of the PUIS problem, e.g. booting a Linux disk allows them to boot and function normally until they are shut down.

Thus I have two Hitachi drives that are useless until I can figure out how to apply this patch.
Do not apply the patch. Install Wind 10 afresh and cure the 2 harddrives first.
I only have Windows10 via vitualplayer under ubuntu now. Foolproof

Thanks Daniel. I can do this but wonder if the install will survive through the reboots. I guess I can keep booting the PW (Linux) disk to revive it until Win10 gets installed.

Will the latest build immediately cure this or do I need to do something else?

When will I know it's safe to remove 10 to add the other 7 image for roommates' Dual Boot?

Update - After installing Windows 10 latest build to a partition on the hard drive and fully updating it, the drive is still bricked needing after every Shutdown to boot a Linux disk to get it to start.

I'm confused whether the issue is even PUIS since when I run the command to see if it's enable it gives an error, as does the command to turn it back on.

Since I'm using a VM, I (obviously) don't have any HDD issues, have you:
    • Checked if there are any weird options in your BIOS/EFI?
    • Tried changing "Power Plan" are you using in W10?

I see no Fast Start or any other setting discussed in the lengthy threads tracking this issue:
build 9879 bricking drives - Microsoft Community

Build 9879 hard drive disaster - Microsoft Community

The Power Plan is Balanced at defaults.

    Deja vu
Yes a update build reset fast start and hibernation and pretty much bricked mine

They put out a fix for some but seem to effected some other drives in the process
No updates on my question there.
    I'm done with 10.

After using it solidly since October I started having mice problems, went back to 7 and feel like I'm home. Now if I can only get the two hard drives 9879 bricked fixed I'll try to forget the whole thing.

I wonder if using "High performance" plan and setting the HDD to Never sleep could help.

    Hi there

You could download W8.1 enterprise trial and make a WINDOWS TO GO - so this would allow you to boot a Windows system to attempt to repair your HDD's. You can make a Windows to Go system on any external HDD --doesn't have to be a "Certified" device. Methods are in the tutorials.

Otherwise you could install VMware vmplayer on any bootable Linux system and a Windows VM and use the Windows VM to repair your drives.

Note here also for people reading this who use Storage spaces.

Note also that if you CREATE storage spaces on W10 and then revert back to W8 the storage spaces will show configuration error -- DO NOT RESET the drives as you will lose data. You need to install W10 again - then the storage spaces will be OK --save the data and THEN revert.

If you create storage spaces in W8 and then go to W10 - they should work.

    Cheers

Since you can boot the drive up, can you wipe and format that partition? And install either Ubuntu or Linuxmint there instead.
Mind you Win10 is only a TP. It works for a few months only.
