CanoScan LiDE 35 on Windows 10 x64

Yes!!! I just successfully set up my Canon Lide 35 scanner with my Windows 10 64bit mini-tower system! Thanks so much to the OP. The info there was pretty much all I needed to get up and running. I also installed the Faststone Image Viewer 6.9 free software and just used it to make my first scan! Yowza! It did take me close to 2 hours to get this done, lots of detours, failures. The big hint I needed was in the OP which was to search the computer for scanner drivers and pick Canon, Inc. and the Lide 60 was listed. I'd installed the EXE's a bunch of times, different ways. I also had done the installation in compatibility mode for Windows 7, and run as administrator for all users as suggested down in the thread. Not sure what all was necessary, but am good now. The first thing I'd done was to install the software from the supplied CD, which failed, of course. As suggested down in the thread I uninstalled all that stuff (except the Photostudio 5.5, don't know if I'll use that, probably stick with Faststone). Hope the scanner front buttons work, I haven't tried any of them yet. Anyway, I can initiate a scan from Faststone. This is my first post here, had to register to give the thumb's up in this thread... Cheers!

Edit: Wish I'd seen the post above mine here before I started trying to install the Lide 60 driver, etc. Pretty succinct and thorough and direct instructions from Rollinjukebox there!!!

For all other old scanners that do not have drivers for 10 and cannot install drivers for 8 or 7 or Vista, use the application VueScan found here: https://www.hamrick.com/

I really ought to try it myself - my trusty 16-year old (!) Lide 35 scanner has gone to its box when I got my current PC two years ago. Not that I would use it that much, but every now and then I feel it would be good to have it back on my desk...

I bought my Canon Lide 35 CanoScan in September 2005 off ebay for 69 bucks.

I met a guy on the golf course this summer who told me he scans everything, keeps no paper. I'm jealous! The Lide 35 stopped working on my old mid-tower XP computer for some reason, got complaints about the drive, I guess. Gotta go upstairs anyway to use it there, so I brought it down to my new mini-tower mid-level rig that drives a 43" TCL 4K display/TV. It sat there a couple weeks, now (thanks to this thread and my diligence early this morning) it's again in my arsenal. Hopefully, it will help me reduce the paper in my life!

You probably know it already but most scanners provide two scanning interfaces to Windows, either their native scanning application (TWAIN) or Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). WIA is for basic functionality while TWAIN almost always enables more features and gives much better results. If you have the choice, avoid WIA, always use TWAIN.

Yes, any manufacturer's driver is usually TWAIN. The exception is some new cheap scanners or MFP printers that only provide WIA.

Ah, MFP printer would be multi-function printer. I sometimes wonder if I didn't make a mistake and get another B&W laser printer without scanning etc. functionality. Now that I have the Canon Lide 35 working and right next to the printer, it's not nearly the issue, however. A trouble free printer is, IMO, pretty crucial, at least for me.

Beware when buying an MFP printer. Cheaper models tend to provide WIA drivers only. The medium priced models provide a much better TWAIN driver. I learned the hard way

I recently upgraded my dad's computer from Pentium 4 "Prescott" (yes, that old) to a new s1151 Pentium CPU. It was running Windows 7 32-bit and I could try booting to the new PC and then upgrade to 10, but the generation gap is too large to work, so I decided to do a clean installation of Windows 10 64-bit. This was going good until I connected his old HP Scanjet 5470C scanner. This officially has drivers only for Windows XP and earlier! I managed to cheat and use it in Windows 7 32-bit using the XP drivers but now I had Windows 10 64-bit and there was no 64-bit driver available, not even for Windows XP 64-bit (I could use that). So I thought of third party solutions such as Vuescan which (I thought, I hoped) supports all old scanners and MFPs. But it did not include this model and trying to force similar models did not work. My workaround was to install VMWare Player, install Windows XP in a virtual machine, connect the scanner to the virtual machine, install the XP drivers and use it from there. I could then switch the virtual machine in "Unity Mode" so I can run only the scanning application in a Window within the host (Windows 10). This is analogous to the "XP Mode" in Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate. I even created a desktop shortcut to automatically run the scanning application without having to manually start the virtual machine and then the application. The only drawback is speed. If the virtual machine is not already running minimized, you have to wait for it booting and loading Windows XP before running the scanning application. So it is a good idea to have it running beforehand if I want to use the scanner. But I would prefer a native solution. So if anyone knows of any 64-bit driver for HP Scanjet 5470C or similar model (that also works with 5470C) or any third party application similar to Vuescan that supports 5470C, please post it here! Thank you in advance! I hope this workaround helps you too until you find a native solution.
