But still, not being able to boot from a single stick of the 4gb ram doesn't seem right. There must be some hardware incompatibility and the laptop is only recognizing 2gb of ram from each of the 4gb simms. Why, I don't know, but that seems to be what is happening.

I have another spare hard disk with windows 7 loaded. I swapped it today and tried to test my new ram sticks on it but it is all the same as in Windows 10. Hence proved that there is no problem with the Windows 10 operating system.

So, the question of compatibility gets more and more serious.

I even had a discussion with CORSAIR Customer care guys, but they are damn confident about its compatibility. After asking some specific technical questions to me they confirmed that the new RAM sticks are not faulty.
They claim that the problem lies with Windows 10 or Sony Vaio. How convenient !

A semi-random suggestion: download and run memtest86+ from a CD or USB key drive.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

If the RAM passes that test, that should eliminate any bad RAM or compatibility issues.

Did you do a bios reset after changing the RAM ?
I always do a bios reset after making a hardware change.

Check in the BIOS if there is a setting for memory called "memory hole remapping" or "memory remapping" or something similar. If that is not enabled hardware reserved addresses will take away from your RAM (it remaps the RAM address space used by the hardware memory map i/o region to a higher address range).

Solved Since Windows 10 not all of my RAM is usable.
I just noticed this. I never had this problem under Windows 8.x. Checked my BIOS and everything looked good. IGPU is turned off. Setting the memory in msconfig Boot|Advanced doesn't work. I've run out of ideas. Looking for a fix. 30002
