    Plugged in, not charging

I've had this HP Envy for years and today my battery won't charge. I'm plugged in, so it's not dying, but my battery is at 1% and the battery status mouseover says "1% available (plugged in, not charging)". I've tried all the search results for this problem, including going into Device Manager and uninstalling the battery driver then scanning for updates, but it's still not charging. I even went into Command Prompt and tried sfc /scannow but it didn't change anything. Please help?

Have you considered the possibility your battery went bad?

I recommend calling/contacting HP about this issue, and they may suggest purchasing a new battery.

Since you have had it for years. That right there states volumes. You need to either see if a local Battery place can get it cheaper than you can through eBay or Amazon.

This is a common problem for many users upgrading to Windows 10 and not only for your machine. I have the same issue...

Windows 10 have a special battery saving mode. Maybe this is incompatible with your old notebook. Try disabling it. I do not have a Windows 10 notebook, so I cannot guide you, but it should be at the power settings.

This happened to me yesterday on my old (2006) MacBook Pro after installing some drivers.

Deleting and reinstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery driver as described here fixed it.

I'm running Windows 10 but the method described for Windows 7 in the link worked just fine.

I have a dell E1505 that I have hade no problems with Win 10 from day one until the latest update ver 1803. There must a bunch of people who have had this "not charging" issue. I have done every step from chilling the battery to removing all the battery drivers via device manager. Nothing worked. at one point I got half way there. I regrouped and played with it for three days. You will see in the procedure that it was the power cfg step that seemed to get it aligned to the system. I no longer have the issue and even the Quickset warning to use the proper Dell charger no longer appears. I hope this helps someone because I never found any Microsoft response that weren't scripted or useful.

    1.
Make sure you have enough battery power to pullthis off. If you don’t you may have to use a friend’s battery.

    2. Disconnect the charger from wall socket. (Laptopnow on battery)
    3. Disconnect the charger from the laptop.
IMPORTANT!! Go to the device manager and in the battery section delete all the drivers. Don't worry they will come back when you turn the laptop on in step 7.
    4. Turn off the Laptop.
    5. Connect charger to wall socket.
    6. Connect charger to Laptop.
    7. Start Laptop.
    8. Wait till it is completely started.
    9. At this point you will see that it is charging. If you disconnect the charger and reconnect it you will be right back where youstarted!
    10. Now this the step that I tried on a whim. Openthe command prompt. Type in
    a. powercfg /batteryreport
    b. Open the report. It has some real interestinginfo then close it.
    11. At his point you can shut down the laptop andsee your charging light is flashing.
    12. Turn your laptop on and click on the batteryicon. Disconnect the cable and it should tell you it is on battery. Reconnectand it should tell you it is charging.

There are 3 points of failure for a laptop that does not charge (And has been determined to be a hardware problem and NOT a software/OS problem). OS problems can be tested as mentioned above.

    • Dying battery (end of recharge cycle limit) as DustSailor and bro67 have mentioned.
    • Defective/dead charger/power supply
    • Broken DC In port (very common)

Sometimes in the case of a broken DC In port you can wiggle the power jack in the port and see it starts to charge and then goes back to "Plugged In Not Charging" when you let go. But not always.

Sometimes with the Charger/Power Supply it is only the jack that is defective.

First order of business is to borrow a Charger/Power Supply (be sure it has the same voltage IN as yours) and test it to see if it will charge the battery.

The rest is replacing parts until you get to the offending one.
The Charger/Power Supply is cheapest to replace first.
    Then the Battery
Then to the shop to see if the DC In port can/should be replaced.

    Bought new battery, Same issue.
Metered the charger. Good to go.
Inspected the batter port. No issue.

I will not disagree that parts do fail. But failure proven to be NOT components leaves...

Just as appoint of interest another issue I found on my friends laptop not charging was a set it pins on the laptop that had some oxidation on them. Cleaned them and all was good.
I hope the combination of our recommendations help those who are perplexed by this right after a win 10 update. That is when my problem showed up.

I also see that on older laptop that use quickset from dell can cause additional problems. I usually do my troubleshooting and determine what the issue is. If I can get it fixed with the steps I outlined I will wait a few days then remove it. The only issues that I have come across is the function buttons are inactivated. If that is an issue for the user I just reinstall it.
