Assuming hardware has not a problem, it might be the manufacturer's trick to block unknown chargers. If you try a non-Dell power supply on a Dell notebook, then it will allow you to switch on and use the device while powered, but it will not charge the battery! Only a genuine Dell charger (with appropriate Watt rating) will also charge the battery. This is a well known Dell trick to force you buy a genuine Dell adapter. As far as I know this doesn't apply to HP or other brands, so I would suspect a broken power socket or dead battery. Your local computer service should be able to diagnose the problem and fix it for a reasonable price.

That is such a typical problem for HP. In my dorm room we had 3 HPs and they all had this problem. Had to buy new ones.

I just noticed this thread originated 12 Sep 2015. I imagine the OP has solved the problem.

Not for the OP but for everyone else. I have a Lenovo T560 laptop and ONLY Lenovo AC chargers. However, randomly, when I boot up the system, I get a message about a non-Lenovo charger with a too-low wattage rating to charge the system. I can't explain this, and it's very intermittent, so I don't worry about it.

    Just saying.
