You can also disable the Synaptics device from Device Manager, if you rather avoid messing with the Registry.

The newer Elan/Synaptics driver seems to break the touchpad settings so that you cannot turn the touchpad on/off or use various scroll options. Is there a new Touchpad entry under Settings>Devices? Are there any of those settings there?Try installing the Microsoft precision touchpad driver:How to install Precision Touchpad Drivers on Windows 10 This will add extra touchpad options under Settings>Devices>Touchpad. Including disable touchpad.

If you open Windows Explorer (press Win+E) or open any folder, you right-click on the This PC icon form the list on the left and select Properties. This will open System Properties in "traditional" Control Panel. From there, click on the Device Manager at the left to see a list with all your devices. Find Mice and other pointing devices and expand it to see Synaptics touchpad. Right-click on the device and select to disable it. That's it!

Thanks for you comments but I Can't see any option to do this other than uninstall device which doesn't help because then i can never use the touchpad eg when the mouse is not handy. Could this be because I'm using Win10 Home rather than Pro?

On previous versions of Win10/Logitech Options, choosing pointing devices or now mouse properties brought up a touchpad tab (in addition to pointer and wheel tabs) where one could alter touchpad properties. This has now disappeared.

The advantage of the regedit solution is that the touchpad is disabled when the mouse is active (mouse usb plugged in) and reactivated immediately when the mouse is disabled (usb connection unplugged).

Hi, with some laptops this is easy- others seem devoid of the function.
Some laptops have a dedicated Fn key, others don't. It's one of those things that used to be easy.

If all else fails, try a small free utility that can allows you to configure a hotkey: job done.

thanks again but this option does not exist anymore on my HP machine. Reading other posts other manufacturers have thoughtfully included this option but people in my boat have no choice but to tinker with the registry. There are several posts in this thread but I shamefully copy the relevant part of marmolejo's post which worked perfectly for me (don't forget to take a back up of the registry before making any changes) (also note default value of key is hex 22 if you need to restore):

Need to open "regedit" and change one key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\DisableIntPDFeature

Value has to be 33 in hexadecimal and next restart will be deactivated.

Is there any reason why you haven’t tried my suggestion which will add full features to the Touchpad entry under Settings including disabling the Touchpad?

@Bastet - when I tried this along while back trying to resolve this issue on my Lenovo Thinkpad, I discovered that whilst this provides the missing options of
    - an option to disable the touchpad
    - optionally disabling the touchpad when the mouse was connected

it also meant my feature-rich driver from Lenovo was replaced with a much sparser one.

Hence I went for the tiny non-intrusive utility which means I can disable it with a hot key - keeping the Lenovo standard driver.

It's a question of what suits each individual case of course.

After a Synaptics driver update I lost the Synaptics tab under Mouse settings within device manager so not only could I disable the touchpad but I had no settings.
This solved the problem for me & as the OP has also lost the ability to disable the touchpad I thought this would benefit them.

I’ll leave the OP to decide which course of action is best.
