What does it show as hidden devices in Device Manager?
bro67
Not much. Device Manager shows the usual suspects with 3 print related items each of which only identifies my old M252 printer with no sign of the new M255dw. If I click on "Show Hidden Devices" I get an extra 7 entries:
Floppy Disc Drives
Intel Centrino Wireless Bluetooth
Intel WiDi
Modems
Memory Management Devices
Portable Devices and
SAMSUNG Android Phone
None of these are printer related and unfortunately the M255dw printer does not appear under any entry as a hidden device.

Connect the printer to the trouble computer via USB and then do the install. After it installs, unhook the USB and connect printer back to ethernet. Reboot router/Gateway and machine to see if it can be seen.
Great idea but I am afraid I cannot get it to work. HP Smart cannot install it as it believes it is a network printer and I can find no way to convince it otherwise. HP Smart will only install it if it is connected to the network.
If I try through Printers and Scanners the M255 does not appear so I click on "The printer I want is not listed" and in the next dialog click on "add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" and that simply hangs.
I think I am about to give up.

All I can do is describe what I have downloaded. I downloaded file Full_Webpack-44.11.2784-LJM255-M256_UWWL_Full_Webpack(1).exe which is I believe the full software. I double clicked to install it. It told me it had installed and put an icon in the new section of the start menu. I clicked that icon which took me to the microsoft store and installed HP Smart. HP Smart is the only HP software which appears on my start menu. HPPrintScanDoctor is installed at C:\Program Files. I am assuming HP Smart ran that to try to resolve non-installation but it simply sat there for 2 hours and did nothing but show the spinner.
Could you kindly describe what HP software appears on your computer so I can compare and see whether I am missing anything whci might point to a solution.

Thanks for that but your url is for an M225. Mine is an M255. When I go to the HP web site and look for full software solution it points me at the Full_Webpack-44.11.2784-LJM255-M256_UWWL_Full_Webpack(1).exe file which is what I downloaded originally.
Do you have a link to a different full software solution for the M255?
