I did not notice my error before.
    I've deleted my irrelevant posts.

The download from the 255 webpage matches the filename you posted before.
It seems to be 151MB, a software package in its own right so I don't know why it's redirecting you to HP Smart.
What HP entries are in the Start menu? [Mine just has the Iris OCR software that is part of the printer's full software package that I download from my HP page for my 477 model.]
What HP entries are in Control panel, Devices & printers, Printers section? [This is where my printer shows up & where I'd expect yours to show up aswell.]

Why not download the universal driver? https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...model/29448869

    No worries.

The only HP item in the start menu is HP Smart. I am slightly baffled because I can no HP entries in program files other than HPPrintScanDoctor so I have no idea where the exe files are for the printer software or HP Smart.

The only enytries in controlpanel/printers are Fax, Microsoft Print To PDF, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, OneNote for Windows 10 and my old M252 printer. The 255 does not appear.

I assume you checked both C:\Program files and C:\Program files (x86).
It seems to me that the software crashed and did not complete the install.

It might be worth a try. The correct drivers for the M255 are already installed on the computer. I did this manually using print server properties. The problem seems to be that the printer installer cannot find the driver. Is there a better chance the installer will find the universal driver?

Yes. There is also a programs folder which also has no HP entries. Perhaps it did crash. It seemed to install very quickly. I will try to reinstall it tomorrow and also try to uninstall HP Smart.

Well I have finally given up. The HP software will not install. It claims it has installed but simply puts some files ProgramData and then only gives me the option to finish.

I have downloaded the universal driver but that has had no effect.

Meanwhile if I try to install via Printers and Scanners > Add Device all I get is the message "connecting", a progress bar appears and quickly completes followed by the message Driver is Unavailable.

Anyone have any idea what Add Device is connecting to? Is it possible that Add Device doesn't have permission to access Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository which is where the M255 drivers are located?

Is your printer software listed in Control panel, Programs & features?
If not then [I'm guessing] a utility such as Revo uninstaller might be able to remove the debris that makes it think it was installed before.
I've never used it myself but kept this link About Revo Uninstaller - Paul Black post #3 - TenForums

In your previous attempts, did you run the installation as Admin?
For all I know, it has a just-for-this-user installation mode [that crashed anyway] that would not need to be elevated so running as Admin would ensure a 'normal' installation was attempted.
    Perhaps it left debris in
    C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\HP

I do have one further idea but it might be a waste of time.
    - Backup your drivers, then
    - Note the paths of the backup folders that start with HP, then
    - In each of those folders, read the *.inf files to make sure they mention your printer model number 255, then
    - Use the Restore drivers procedure to restore just those paths that do mention your printer model number.

My thoughts being that reinstalling the drivers this way will give Windows a second chance to install them correctly.

    All the bets,

That would be a Windows fault for which SFC and, if necessary, a Repair install would be worth a try.
    SFC - TenForumsTutorials
If SFC reports irreparable errors, do read the notes at the end of Option 3 for the Dism cmd to run whilst connected to the internet.
