Image restored on to a HDD not booting is a common and known problem. You may google search on the topic. It does not in anyway confirm that the power supply is bad.

Instead , delete all the partitions in the HDD, check its health and if in good health. perform a clean install and it should boot.

It's more than the HD not booting. There is no power, no fan, no beeping, blank screen

OK. Tell us what happens when you replace the power brick with the the new one. Post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management.

The power supply didn't work, so I sent it back. I've had a lot of computers, but none were HP, Dell, etc. They were all custom made. So I'm wondering if HP does something strange to the HD that causes it to behave like this. I put in another good HD that I put an image of this HP computer. I would expect to get some beeps or the fan spinning and something on the monitor. All I get is a blank screen with no beeps or noise. What does HP do that makes this act this way?

What would happen if I put a blank HD plus a Win 10 install CD? Shouldn't I get at least some action, like beeps, or the fan spinning, and not a blank screen?

It sounds like you can't even boot into BIOS/UEFI.

If you can't do that with no disk in, your problem is way more basic than trying to install Windows.

    @GerryPeters,

HDDs or SSDs cannot be a reason for a non-boot . As dalchina pointed out you have a serious hardware problem in the HP motherboard. The BIOS chip is not getting the power or something else..

Long long back, I had a problem with the MSI motherboard on a PC that I had built for a friend. I had a spare MSI motherboard which I put into it, made it working and returned the PC to the friend. Luckily MSI had a service point in our city and they repaired the motheboard and returned it to me. If I remember correctly they changed the BIOS chip.

My advice now will be to talk to HP support, return the laptop to the nearest HP Service or any other reputed Laptop repair agency along with the power brick.( HP will most probably not do a chip-level repair and may change the entire motherboard.). They will be able to diagnose the problem and do the needful. Give up your preconceived notions that the power supply is bad or HDD is causing the problem .

I also tried replacing the Bios battery to no avail. Since it looks like it's something on the motherboard, we will likely buy another HP for $399.

I may try one last ditch effort of shorting out pins 2 and 4 on the motherboard itself, instead of like I did on the power switch ribbon cable.

That will be the best option.

Make it simple as possible. Disconnect all devices from the MB
    - Disconnect all drives from the MB
    - Remove the graphics card (if it has one)
    - Remove the memory sticks (with power supply disconnected).

See if it try to start. If it doesn't the problem is the MB.
If it try to start, disconnect the power supply and insert on memory stick.
If it try to start, connect the graphics card.
If it try to start keep connecting one piece of hardware at a time.

You may find that one piece of hardware is preventing the computer to boot.

I got a new computer for my wife, a Lenovo All in one. It's a big step up for her with the increased speed of the SSD drive and newer electronics.

I'm now seeing if I can resurrect the 1TB SATA HD from the HP computer. I started this thread with the Crystal Info and the Caution notice for this HD. I downloaded Western Digital Dashboard and did the extended Smart test and it passed just fine after about an hour of testing. Then I went back Crystal Info and started it. It immediately had results for my HD's and still had a Caution for this 1TB HD. I guess I really don't understand Crystal Info. It takes a few seconds for it to come to that conclusion, whereas the WD Dashboard took over an hour. I wonder if I should do more testing and zero out the drive. Any suggestions?
