Many new laptop pcs are now powered via a usb port now. The usb port acts as power input as well as a peripheral port.

Some laps allow power by usb port or a separate traditional power socket.

My company laptops only power by the "thunderbolt" usb c ports.

Read your pc manual specs to get more information.

    Hello Cerberus,

Sadly the laptop came with lame hook up instructions and the names of parts. Is this usb power source critical? I never take the laptop outside the house and I always have it plugged in. Is simply using the power cord instead of the usb cord safe?

    I'm sorry

    It's an HP Envy x360

The usb cord I'm talking about is this, I just found the info now.

USB Type-C connector and Thunderbolt port with HP Sleep and Charge

Thanks cerberus. I'd give you a like but it won't let me.
