    M.2 Heatsink

    Hi,

I intend to use 1TB Samsung 980 Pro and I saw it has a heatsink.

    1. What is the difference between the 1TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 heatsink vs the motherboard M.2 heatsink?

    2. What is the difference [1TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 with heatsink in a motherboard with M.2 heatsink] vs [1TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 with heatsink in a motherboard without M.2 heatsink]

    3. Is it important to have heatsink on motherboard M.2?

    4. Can I add M.2 heatsink to a motherboard that does not have M.2 heatsink?

    5. Can I add heatsink to a M.2 Internal SSD that does not have heatsink?

My understanding is no heatsink for the m.2 slot for this motherboard PRIME B550M-A WIFI II|Motherboards|ASUS Global

    Thanks

Sorry, but I don't see any M.2 heatsink on that board. Can you make a picture?

I said "My understanding is no heatsink for the m.2 slot for this motherboard", no m.2 heatsink.

The motherboard doesn't need a heatsink where the M.2 slot is.
The M.2 SSD however, "does" need a heatsink on itself though.

Some motherboards "come" with heatsinks ON the M.2 slot, but those heatsinks are FOR the top of the M.2 SSD.
You remove them, install the M.2 SSD, then put the heatsink ON the SSD.

Which heatsink is better? Generally the "bigger, heavier" one.
The more metal, the more heat it can soak up.
Things like "fins" on the heatsink help also. More heat dissipation.

    Short version...
There's three ways to get an M.2 SSD heatsink.
    1. They come with the SSD
    2. They come with the motherboard.
    3. You buy them separately.

This is suppose to be a generic question on all motherboards heatsink, not a particular motherboard. Change "the motherboard M.2 heatsink" to "a motherboard M.2 heatsink"

Thank you for the clear explanation.

It is weird that the site needs to set a limit to the Thanks button, when I press it this appears "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Ghot again."

The heat capacity depends on the mass of the heatsink
The heat transmission depends on the size and shape of the fins. (Nusselt-Number)
Vertical fins have a better heat transmission than horizontal (Reynold-Number)

QA. Is a heatsink necessary for M.2 SSD?

QB. Samsung 980 Pro has 2 versions, 1 with heatsink and 1 without heatsink, I will be buying either [Samsung 980 Pro 7000MB/s Gen4 Nvme M.2] or [Samsung 980 Pro HEATSINK 7000MB/s Gen4 Nvme M.2], which one should I buy?

QC. Does those M.2 SSD that has a heatsink version means that M.2 SSD model is hotter and should use a heatsink?

    Thanks

Take the 980 pro with heatsink, the m.2 gen4s tend to run hotter than the gen3s. With or without heatsink it's the same.
