Okay ... so a response I just typed has been swallowed by the Internet Goblin and has disappeared (!)

    So, a second go ...

When you swapped over the USB mouse, did you restart your pc or simply swap the mice over?

If you didn't restart, I'd swap the mice over then restart your pc and see if you still get the same 'wandering mouse' issue. If you do, that suggests to me that the fault lies with the computer's USB side of things (either hardware or a driver) and not the mouse - especially as with no USB mouse plugged in and just the trackpad, you say the problem is absent.

    Just a thought.

Consider the surface on which the mouse is placed.

Try this: Connect the mouse, but turn it upside down.

    Do you see any movement?

This is my 2nd device, so only 500GB - of which Windows eats up like 85%.
A clean install of Windows might take 20+ GB.

If your Windows partition is that large, presumably you have a lot of large programs or a huge amount of personal data there too.

To check where the space has gone try Wiztree (free) - excellent cushion map at the bottom after a quick scan.

Please post a screenshot of your partitions.

Have another person operate a mouse to see if the same problem occurs.

If it is a similar problem to that which I experienced, 'Error above Keyboard' doesn't apply.

Mine turned out to be a USB mouse that had suddenly gone south.

Hi guys, KUDOS for your feedback, and sorry it takes me quite a while getting back to it (checking & fixing), I'm swamped with to-do's, not that the issue is solved.. =/

Re-started one more time, just to make sure. If at all possible, it's worse - now the right-click gets mixed up with left-click, and mouse jumps by cursor disappearing-reappering.. I can't figure it out. I'm not running any programme that ought/may disrupt the mouse, except I see the instances increase (as I already mentioned) whenever Windows runs its tasks (Modus Installer et al).

So, assuming it may be USB-port, what could I try to rule it out? Sorry, never tried before. Got to ask..

Hah! Interesting one. Mouse upside down 'behaves' - no wiggles, unless I wiggle it more than lightly.. So I ought to experiment with surfaces? (unfortunately straight on the table doesn't work, I gotta give it some 'rug' to run on..)

Will check/do Wiztree, might need a little while to get back THNXxx

mmm no can do, if what you mean is lend the mouse to someone. While my other computer was still operating, never had issues. But then same (good but old) mouse glitched on this computer (laptop), so I just bought a new mouse, thinking it's age/mouse. New mouse now wrecks havoc..

UPD = screenshot of Wiztree. So you see I got almost no drive space (50GB total), but even so I'm using barely 1/5 of total.. of the 50, about 7 are free currently (ie 43GB used up). Having said that, this one is 'travelmate' so it performs even on less than 1GB without glitches. In both scenarios, mouse keeps glitching.

UPD-2 = the mouse seems better on a different surface, but cursor still episodically disappears/jumps, so the actual cause wasn't solved. I'm tempted to tinker with USB drivers (if that could be the culprit), I just don't know what to do there..

No wandering with mouse upside down does suggest changing the surface, unless you're experiencing continuous tremors or vibration of course... (sure you haven't got a tunnelling machine at work under your house?).

That's quite a small disk and miniscule free space.
    See:
Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10
Delete Temporary Files in Windows 10

Start by disabling hibernation (you will also lose Fast Startup).
Hover over each of the largest blocks shown in Wixtree's map and pick out items you don't need.

Check to see if you have large programs you don't use and uninstall them using a 3rd party uninstaller e.g. Geek Uninstaller (free).
Go here- order apps by size as shown.

See this - ensure Storage Sense is on.

    Delete old unwanted downloaded files

Clear the Recycle bin. Delete dmp, wer and any very large log files.
