disk turns off in 20 minutes

Hello, I hope you are well. I would like to ask a question about this disk shutdown function, and from what I understand, the disk shuts down in 20 minutes, but the computer continues to work or does the disk just shut down in idle mode? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to interact with this topic.

    Hello,

The hard drive will power off after 20 minutes of no user activity (idle). If anything tries to access the drive after it has been powered off, it will automatically power and spin back up.

And you would think that powering up an SSD would be instantaneous, so this setting might not matter. But on my Dell XPS laptop I would have to wait 5-6 seconds to access a folder on a USB 3.2 SanDisk Extreme SSD after the OS powered it off. In my case, it was being powered off after only 1 minute. I obviously changed that setting (once I made the registry change to make the setting visible in the Control Panel). YMMV.

If I'm not mistaken, those low power settings were just stuck there in an effort to save on the power not for you, but the power company and the grid. I know that's going to sound very not true, but I believe I have read bits and drabs that this was the case and thought of since it was assumed all the computers out there would put a massive drain on the power grid.

So with that said, I NEVER, ever use low power modes in my PC. Especially the low power modes for a network card or USB hub. You can find those property sheets in device manager or the properties of the devices themselves. It's my PC and I want it to perform at top not performance without anything breaking due to a BS low power state. Believe me. If your PC is used in critical infrastructure or some hobby and your NIC powers down or USB, it'll mess your stuff up in a hell of a hurry.

The only "low power mode" there should be is one in which the electronics themselves are made to be more power efficient and/or we migrate to photons rather than electrons...

Is this disk shutdown the same as the one we program for the PC to shut down after so many minutes?

Thank you very much for helping

It's a separate setting only for the hard drive.
