For large storage... go to PCPartpicker.
Look at Western Digital "Black" 4TB or bigger 3.5" hard drives.
    I have these...
    WD4005FZBX and WD8001FZBX

If you have money fallin' out of your pockets... get an SSD.

I use several 2 TB enterprise grade Hitachi platters for downloads and whatnot. They all have over 30,000 hours and still kicking.

You could always get a NAS... Use Syncthing... Will need to be deployed in Docker in the NAS.

My main drive is a 2 TB NVMe. It has Windows, crap, some more crap and my Steam games.

Another hard drive I have installed is an SSD. It has Windows 7 installed.

SSDs are super cheap and plenty fast for most, and sometimes the price is the same as an NVMe. So if you could do it go NVMe instead if your application can merit it. For me, I chose to put Windows 10 on the NVMe and Windows 7 on the SSD. But if you're looking for a MASS of storage, go Hitachi enterprise grade hard drives which can be bought used. Even if they're used these drives can go and go. I bought mine used many years ago on eBay! Two were probably in a RAID configuration no less with about 15,000 hours already when I bought them. They are only 2 TB though, but plenty for me personally. I think Western Digital bought Hitachi. It's the old Hitachis you want. The exact hard drive I have here are the HUA723020ALA640. If you pay over $50 you're getting ripped off. I see Walmart has the balls to charge some $200.

No. USB is NOT faster than SATA III. USB 3.1 Gen 2 onwards, perhaps - in the right conditions. Depends on the file types... Many small files will slow it down like a slow loris.

    The main difference is performance.
As 2.5" HDD are for laptops and they speed at 5400 RPM because of the gyroscopic effect.
The 3.5"HDD, that are intent to be used on desktops that don't move around, normally speed at 7.000 RPM or 10,000 RPM. That makes them perform better than 5400 RPM drives.

Unless you're looking for huge drives (4 T or bigger) buy a SSD. HDD are dead tech.

And remember, if you add a drive, also increase the backup.
You can get 10k rpm 2.5 drives,

Hard drives are not dead tech they still useful. The best drives currently are still platter drives. I forgot what the new style ones are now but those ones data centers are using now for social media are platter style because you can't get that sort of capacity with robust redundancy in a SSD.

it will be pmr type drives.

I agree with above they are still useful you can thrash around a platter drive without really worrying about read and writes. I also use them for downloads as this is a good way to mitigate wear and tear on your SSD's, its also bulk storage for stuff that does not require speed as a primary factor which is means less wear and tear.

USB is faster than Sata 3 anywhere from 5 to 20gbits/s since rev 3 and usb 4 is doing 40gbits/s
sata 3 is only doing 6gbit/s therefore a docking station wont negativity effect the speed of the hard drive if you plug it into the right usb port.

I have a WD Gold bought about 6 years ago. WD Gold are enterprise drives and has 5 years warranty.
You have to options: Buy a 2.5" SATA SSD or a 3.5" SATA HDD.
    4T 2.5" SATA SSD
    4T WD Gold

The specs of the PC case says it supports only one 3.5inch hard disk, how can I add another 3.5inch hard disk? (Total becomes 2)
Hi, you posted the link about your specific motherboard. According to the picture, you have 4 SATA ports available, this means you can have 4 hard disks in total. SATA are the data connectors, for energy it depends on what cables come with your computer, and don't worry about space, as long as there are no short circuits and there is enough ventilation / air-flow, its ok.

3.5" hard disks are larger and often consume more energy than 2.5" hard disks. I personally prefer 2.5" for energy consumption and space. Speed (RPM and such) depends on the model. SSD disks are way faster, and often consume way less energy. There are other types, like nvme, or pci etc SSds but I think this answers your question already, as you have enough SATA ports to connect 4 hard drives. Yes, you can buy and plug PCI cards to extend capacity and plug more SATA hard drives on extra SATA ports, but as said, you don't seem to need this.

We could make suggestions about your case specs, if you listed the make/model of the case.

Try cloning terabytes worth of data via USB. Now use SATA...

The point still stands if you plug a docking station into a usb 4 port it will have that potential bandwidth of 40gbits a second. Which is well over sata 3's 6gbits bandwidth.

it means that no the docking station is not a bottle neck if plugged into the right port.

Sata 3 is 600mb/s transfer speed total over 6gbits bandwidth comprised of each enumerable device / by the controllers.

Its the same logic for USB 4 but with a few 1000mb/s transfer speed over 40gbits/s bandwidth. In theory it should be 3 times faster than sata 3 so it should be able to do up to 1800 mb/s transfer. In theory.

Fastest SSD Enclosure Tested: ZikeDrive Delivers 3,700 MBps via USB 4 | Tom's Hardware

The main drives you will be plugging into that station are most likely sata 3 drives so 3 times slower on a 3 times faster connection which would give you the sata 3 speeds if everything else lined up it won't but you should be in the ballpark of sata 3 speeds still.

the other point is if your transfer is going slow on usb its either because you are using the wrong port or because your source medium or destination medium are to far apart in terms of throughput and one is bottlenecking the other.

How fast should an external drive be? | Support Seagate US

The main take away is as long as you plug the external device into the correct port then its not really an issue overall because USB 3.2 or 4 can do past sata 3. It could even be another reason that its better performance to usb 4 some of your hard drives in the future like even the ones inside the case. Anything that is not in a M.2 slot.

I alluded in another thread that sata is subject to become legacy this is another reason why.

It gets to convoluted because there is many factors for slow speeds or not receiving the right speeds but overall a docking station won't hamper the drives speed if its in the right port its everything else outside of that which is context dependent.
