Anybody running alternative software to CyberPower's PowerPanel?

Windows 10 Pro 22H2, 64-bit. I have a CyberPower UPS which I generally like but the last two versions of CyberPower's monitoring software (PowerPanel Personal) produce a crash dump when I shut down or reboot my PC. I've opened a support ticket with CyberPower and are underwhelmed by their support. Is anyone running alternative monitoring software with their CyberPower UPS? PowerPanel would be OK if it didn't produce a crash dump every time I shut down or reboot.

I have a CyberPower UPS and just don't use the software with it (probably loaded with privacy invading telemetry anyway). Don't need to, really. If the power goes out the UPS' internal relay kicks in and I have a temp amount of backup power to safety turn the computer off. That's it. No software required.

Where software shines is if you're AWAY from the computer and the power goes out. Now you need software to turn the PC off or hibernate (not recommended) automatically since you're not there to conduct that manual task of PC shut down or hibernation.

I don't recommend those Windows low power modes of sleep or hibernation. They may not pose an issue now, but may in the future. I've seen it many times on scores of tech forums all across the Internet. It seems like how Windows uses ACPI can be very buggy. So there's that.

I think, though I haven't tried this. If you uninstall the software and just run the USB cable from the UPS to the computer, Windows should auto handle it via ACPI. You'd just go into the Windows power options. I think and configure there. Not sure.

Whenever you're dependent on some software that probably weighs in on at few hundred megabytes and it's not commercial/industrial grade, it's going to be a failure sooner or latter...

I am fully shutting down; not using Fast Startup. This is the response I got from CyberPower after I wrote back and gave them the contents of the Event Log when this happens:

It looks like the PPP is programmed that way. The crash will be recorded whenever the program fails during rebooting or when it is running. When the computer sleeps or reboots, the UPS will lose communication with it.

I think that's an outrageously bad response. The offending program (pppd.exe) should be able to detect that Windows is shutting down and expect to lose contact with the UPS; not treat it like a error condition. I'll respond back to them and ask if they intend on fixing it.

I looked at the article in your link ("Installing and Configuring a UPS with Windows 10"); it's a bit old (2017). I uninstalled the CyberPower software but Windows didn't show me any battery controls, so things must have changed in Windows since then. I did have an older version of PowerPanel (2.3.4) that doesn't crash when my system reboots or is shut down so I'll stick with that for now. I let CyberPower know that I thought the current version exhibits a software defect. I worked for a mainframe software company many years ago and one of the things that was drummed into our heads is that when a customer has to revert to a previous software release it erodes confidence.

In any case, thanks for your input.

Wow, you're right. I don't even see those power options for a UPS in the Power Options of Windows. It was there for years as far as I remember.

Yeah, they certainly have a glitch there that needs to be ironed out. It happens... hopefully they listen to the customer. Which in this day and age not often it seems.

Did you ever get any satisfaction from CyberPower?

I recently purchased a CyberPower UPS and installed the pppd.exe program to control it.
My system has been unstable with freezing and crashes. I've been pulling my hair out and looking at the reliability panel I kept seeing pppd.exe not loading or not responding. At first, I thought it was just my system crashes and subsequent restarts that was causing the pppd.exe to reload. Presently I have uninstalled it and no crashes or freezes, I can't be sure until I run without any issues for a while. I did see that even with the software uninstalled Windows still show that the CyberPower UPS is there working properly.

I have v2.5.1 of CyperPower pppd.exe installed on my Win10 22H2 system and it works just fine.

Thanks AK6DN. I am watching my system closely since I uninstalled my APP so far so good.

Not sure what the APP version was, but since I recently installed the UPS app from their web site it must have been the latest.
