For plain old usage, you would be fine with a B550 chipset. If you want more performance and more features, go with an X470 chipset if you can find a motherboard that supports it these days. They have been superseded by the x570 which is an even better chipset.

I have a Ryzen 2700 in my partner's machine and it has an x570 chipset. It's working great.

At work, we pair the Ryzen 2600/3600/5600 CPUs with B550 motherboards. They work just fine too.

I don't understand what you are trying to find out. Each motherboard has chipsets that support certain CPUs. For example, motherboards with A320, B350 and X370 chipsets came out with the Ryzen 1000 series CPUs. However, many of the motherboards with these chipsets support newer Ryzen 2000, 3000 and 5000 series CPUs. Newer motherboards with newer chipsets are designed for newer CPUs but many are compatible with older CPUs too.

If you want to find out what CPUs a particular chipset supports go to the website for a particular motherboard with that chipset and look at what CPUs they suppport. It is as simple as that.

Ohh! so the MB determines the chipset, not the cpu.. ugh. good to know.. we installed the x570 thinking it was correct but now that needs to be reevaluated. should we notice problems when the chipset we installed is not the right one?

    now all makes sense

    - - - Updated - - -

hold on.. what is this? GA-A320M-S2H (rev. 1.x), rev2 rev3?, are these MB versions?

    - - - Updated - - -

thanks but how did you get this result?

    - - - Updated - - -

from everything i learned now its best to get the chipset here GA-A320M-S2H (rev. 1.x) Support | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global
    do you agree?

There are so many options to build a computer.
    - You choose a CPU (Intel or AMD) to suite your needs (processing x cost)
    - You choose a MB to match the CPU. For the same CPU you will find some low cost MB up to a very expensive MB with WiFi, many M.2 slots etc. The MB comes with the chipset that is soldered to it. It is not a interchangeable item.
    - You choose the memories to suite your needs (Speed and amount x cost)
    - You choose the GPU to suite your needs.
    - The last item is the PS to handle the above.

The motherboard manufacturer, especially on older motherboards, doesn't always have the latest chipset drivers.
    AMD does, however.
