thanks i will just get a ab type switch i found some on ebay then set the switch close to the network switch and when i need the printer it will be a bit handier. thanks for the help and the ideas
I have only one question to ask. Are both computers connected through your modem/router to the Internet?

If the answer is yes then you absolutely do not need any kind of switch or any other hardware. Period. Just plug the printer into one of the computers USB port and share it over your local network. It is simple as that. Am I missing something?

For 10 years I had a HP Deskjet 970cse printer. It was plugged into Desktop #1 USB port. I shared that printer over my home network to all my other computers. Some were connected through Ethernet while others were connected through Wi-Fi.

yes i know that but both pcs are not on at the same time. if they were both on at the same time i would do that. also this printer has only the printer style usb port. it has wifi but like i said it seems to go offline all the time. that might be the reason it was on ebay back 5 or so years ago. but i got 3 of them 2 for friends and they do the same thing.

anyway i do know about the sharing but the way we use the pcs the best way is either plugging them into the needed pc or hooking up an ab switch. but what i was wondering about is if connecting 2 pcs thru a 2 into 1 usb cable without the ab switch would work so i would not have to mess with the ab switch. and if by chance both pcs were on anyone could access the printer directly. but my best approach looks to be getting a ab switch. this is not an ab switched cable but a standard 2 in 1 cable that i was asking about if this might work? thanks

    My guess.
Unless one PC was turned off you might find the 2 PCs conflicting with each other over ownership of the printer. Then there's the matter of 5 volts . Not worth it. Use a switch or switched cable.
