Convert disk from MBR to GPT

I have Windows 7 64-bit running on one partition of a drive where I'd like to add a Win 10 installation.

What is the best way to convert from MBR to GPT without worry of any data loss on the Windows 7 partition?

    Thanks.

Make free or pay backup images and save them to another disk drive or the cloud.

(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)

You cannot Initialize one partition GPT while having the other Partition on the same disk Initialized MBR. The whole disk must be Initialized one way or the other.
If you Convert the whole disk, including the Windows 7 partition to GPT for UEFI Bios, you will not be able to login to Windows 7 partition again.
You can leave the whole disk Initialized MBR and install Windows 10 to the secondary partition, it does not require GPT. There is no advantage to converting to GPT unless you are adding a disk that is larger then 2TB

As stated, 3rd Party partitioning apps will be able to convert MBR to GPT without loosing data, only with the paid version. There is a command-line utility called gptgen.

If you Convert the whole disk, including the Windows 7 partition to GPT for UEFI Bios, you will not be able to login to Windows 7 partition again.
Several 3rd party partition managers will do the conversion and automatically create esp partition, correct the bcd entries and volume values as needed. Aomei partassist pro for example.

Or it can be done manually in a few steps.

I use diskgenius for this task ( free version will do )

I have read this is only true for Windows 7 32-bit, but not for Windows 7 64-bit. You are referring to a BIOS-specific conflict?

This would be ideal. However, the Windows 10 installer would not allow me to proceed with the install. It complained about the MBR partition and said GPT was required. My partition is only 450 gig. The full disk is only 1TB.

it will complain if you boot the installation media in efi mode.

boot it in bios mode to keep setup.exe happy with mbr disk.

or you can cheat with winntsetup. No need to boot anything.

    https://mega.nz/folder/ObATya7C#oR2t79bT-4MGjKxOAYwkbQ

Run winnsetup from within your existing win7

Select Location of Windows installation files = click the search button and browse to the installation iso/wim/esd. If it is an iso it will be mounted automatically

Boot Drive = It should find the active partition automatically in bios mode or it will find the esp automatically in efi mode.

Select Location of installation drive = select the partition you want win10 to be installed on

Then click Setup button. At the next window accept the defaults and click Ok

How did you burn the Windows 10 Installer? If you used the Media Creation Tool it should recognize that you have an older MBR Bios and install.
If you burned it using an app like Rufus, In Rufus, under Partition Scheme, take the drop down arrow and choose MBR instead of GPT. When completed, you can boot of the installer and it will recognize your Flash drive and install Windows 10.
