mount only a specific drive in D:

I have configured a VeraCrypt drive (disk encryption software like BitLocker) to use the D: letter but problem is when I connect other drives before I mount the encrypted one, they take up the D: letter. I know that instead of D: I can set something further down, like X:, I was just wondering if I have another choice.

Is there a way to tell Windows not to mount a drive in D: unless it's that specific partition?

You can do it the other way round, sort of- and assign a specific letter to each of your other drives.

(Which idea is what F22 simpilot repeats and gives you a link for).

Better would be to assign a letter late in the alphabet for your mounted Veracrypt drive.

You're looking for persistent drive letters. Read this and then plug in the devices that keep taking D and reassign them other letters starting from letter Z and move backwards.

Used to be Windows would start assigning drive letter Z to a NAS drive then work back up the alphabet but the last couple versions of Windows allows random choices. To keep my memory somewhat intact I stay with that with my NAS drive. But it's no issue to assign a letter to a USB drive that is constantly plugged in, does make it recognizable. Installing programs on a removable drive can be problematic after removal and plugging back in, same port may not be recognized properly for those programs. It's an issue for those computers with 2 or more USB ports.
