Severe Lagging in Mouse and Keyboard

A new problem has just come up. I am getting pretty severe lagging with my mouse mostly but also at times my keyboard. They're not new. Both are wireless and I've swapped the batteries but that doesn't help. Also plugged the usb receiver into a different port, that also didn't help. There were no other configuration changes made.

The only difference is that I moved my system. I'm not at home now - I had to go out of town for a month so I packed up the computer so that I wouldn't have to use just my laptop and I'd have access to all my stuff. I packed everything up real good for the 1,000 mile car ride and then put the system together in the hotel. I did not take my printer. I took the computer, monitor, speakers, keyboard & mouse. I did not take my router - I'm using hotel wifi via my usb wifi receiver (because my motherboard doesn't have onboard wifi). I was not using this wireless wifi at home. It was broadband cable into the router there, with an ethernet cable into the computer.

What happens is the mouse will just freeze up for a couple seconds as I move it. Sometimes the keyboard will also freeze up where the keys won't work for like a couple seconds or so, looks like lagging. Could this have something to do with the wifi receiver? This all started after I set up the system here at the hotel. I don't know what else could be. The computer itself seems to work as it did at home.

Same set up here and did experience it once myself.
    - In the device manager look at the individual USB power settings. also do you provide additional power to wherever the receivers are plugged in? anything else plugged in that that draws?
    - Other factors I have found areas of radio interference i.e. when my laptop is close nearby running, Channel choice?
    - Choice of USB ports. For some reason the two nano receivers which were plugged into a USB3 bank (Sabrent) suddenly had communications issues. Plugging them in to the USB2 ports , which also were of different location resolve the issue.
    - Last but not least change immediate proximity location and see if the performance changes.
    - do you have an I/O intensive USB or Bluetooth device running as well?
    - I also believe that a recent Windows update resolve the issue I had as now they're working just fine again residing in the USB3 back there were before.

Lastly, search this "USB wifi mouse will just freeze up for a couple seconds as I move it. Sometimes the keyboard" you'll be surprised...

    Hello

From my experience and similar problems, the mouse lag i had was coming from Windows trying to sync data to the 'System Information folder' every couple of seconds. System Restore.

A way for you to try and diagnose this problem, is find where the spike is coming from.

Load up 'Task Manager', and then go to the 'Performance' tab.
Now at the bottom, select, 'Open Resource Monitor'

Once 'Resource Monitor' is open, now hit the 'Disk' tab. In the list below that, you'll see 'Disk Activity' as a live function.

Keep the Disk Activity window open whilst your using Windows and wait for the mouse surge/spike, and you should see the extra Disk usage and the files that the problem is coming from.

On my system, it first initially looked like Windows Media Player was trying to sync any device that was connected to a USB port and back it up to System Restore.

I firstly stopped all Windows Media Player Services and Network Services.
Then went to the Task Schedular and located the Windows Media Sharing folder and deleted any tasks that were showing.

Now i disabled System Restore, then removed all the Restore Points.
Then i went to the System Information folder manually through the Command Prompt and used the commands

    del./s
    del../s

Ok, then i re enabled System Restore. Created a restore point.
Rebooted the machine and the mouse lag dissapeared. Job done.

Its like a virus or corruption within the System Information folder im pretty sure.

Good luck with this as i had it for ages.

    @Brucex64
I can get a similar condition on my system if I have multiple windows open in my web browser of which at least two are streaming contents.
    Try the simple following:
go to msconfig.exe hide all Microsoft service drivers and temporarily disable all others.
    Reboot.
Are you still dealing with the same issue?
if not, and I know it's a bit tedious, in msconfig enable one service driver and reboot.
observe if the issue is present or not then go enable the next one and reboot.
and so on and so forth.

Also, does it happen as well when you boot in Safemode?

It could be a poorly written service driver or, though unrelated, I once had an issue with my context menu always taking about 20 to 30 seconds to show up upon click. Turns out it was a service driver (Adobe) who had caused it.
Once eliminated all was fine again.

So my thought is the lag you experience could be due to some [poorly coded] driver issue hogging randomly or periodically your system momentarily.

It sounds like there's some other technology in the room that is causing this interference. It is using a similar GHz (or whatever it's called) as your wireless USB transmitter is using.

Maybe put your computer in a different location in the room, and try it out there.

If your Mouse & Keyboard have a "reconnect" button on the bottom, try doing that for them to find a new "channel" to connect to the wireless USB transmitter.

Try connecting the mouse/keyboard receiver to an extension USB 2.0 cable.

As mentioned in my comment #2, interference is the most likely cause but certainly not limited to, as these devices fall under the FCC rule part 15 "must accept interference from other sources". However to be clear, it does not have to be limited to such.

I did a little test and can create successfully your situation under the following conditions:
    1. I have my cell phone nearby (a major interferer!) especially when Bluetooth (BT) activated to one or more devices
    OR
    2. At my desktop with Wi-Fi MS/KB I have next to it my laptop connected via Wi-Fi.

Cell phone being the worst. Just turn on a radio and anywhere between AM and FM you can hear some weird "alien*" like noises especially when a call is coming.
The Electromagnetic interferences are quite high that even the radio which is nowhere near the mobile frequency band reacts to it.
I have also found that BT can be quite a interfering disturbance as well!

So now think how your poor mouse & KB is trying to send its puny little signals of its whereabouts or keystrokes through all this electromagnetic noise! It's like if you were standing on a AP tarmac trying to hold a normal conversation....

*search: "Mobile phone causes weird alien like noise on the radio" and you will get a plethora of returns!
Then try: "Mobile phone interference with wireless mouse or keyboard".

Nevermind cell phone or signal jammers, intentionally or coincidentally!

I find the only interference you get from a USB mouse, is to Frequency Modulator.

Theres literally 1000's and 1000's of frequencies which the USB mouse will bind to and i dont think you'll get any interference from anything unless its at exactly the same frequency which i find very hard to believe.

Mouse lag upon movement is more like a Windows hard drive issue.

Ok guys I apologize for lack of an update. During this extended trip I was too busy to experiment with different things. When I came home to my regular setup I stopped using the wireless internet USB adapter - my computer at home is wired - and now my computer runs at its usual speed where I can have many tabs and programs open with no problem. My keyboard and mouse are still wireless with the receiver plugged into the back of the computer as usual. But in the hotel, with that usb wifi, the thing was almost unusable at times. It must be some kind of interference. Not my phone - it wasn't next to the computer all the time. There was no additional power - the wifi usb plugged in was powered by the computer. I did try moving them to a USB3 port but that didn't help. Another thing...for a while at home I did use the usb wifi when I experimented with 5g home internet and had the box across the room by the window. It was not sluggish then, with the same usb wifi adapter plugged into it along with the keyboard & mouse and my phone nearby. Weird. I wonder if there was some other interference in that hotel room?

I will have to remember this if I ever take my computer away from home. I didn't have this problem when using my laptop remotely because that did not use usb wifi - the wifi is built into the board inside.
