Yeah, it was gone when I woke up this morning and had to reboot. It's happened about 4-6 times recently.

Intermittent failures are the worst to solve. They come and go.

HDDs are dead tech. With the SATA SSDs prices falling I would think of a SSD replacement.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the problem may be somehow related to Prime video app.

Nope, probably not caused by Prime app. Still investigating. A further problem is it didn't show up after reboot. It did on a second attempt.

Thanks. Obviously worth swapping the drive just to try to eliminate it.

Are the check marks from Hard Disk Sentinel?

Most probably. Stop running HDS. See what happens.

    Note: there is an option:

It is rather a good idea to monitor drives so you get an early alert to degradation. HDS can do this in a couple of ways and alert you accordingly; don't want to pay or use the recent giveaway? Crystal Diskinfo (much more basic) can also do this.
