Thanks for your suggestions for cards. I just wanted to check compatability. Have checked the specs for my pc and the PCIe slots are 2.0 x8 - which if I understand right can handle 4 GB/s. So I'm guessing I won't get anything like the 10 GB/s the cards in your links are offering? But a big improvement on USB2.

Wanted to check they are the best/most compatible cards now the PCIe specs are known.

I would question if it is worth spending 20 quidish on that old machine.

Ideally should get something that supports win11 ( 8th gen or newer ) but that will probabaly be about £100.

Alternatively if the budget is very tight, for £37.50 there are things like this. Much newer than your current machine and already include usb3 and also sata3 which will get the most out of your existing ssd. Doesnt offficially support win11 but isnt all that much more than you would spend on a half working usb3 card.
Looks at first like it is collection only, it is in fact postage included. It gives an idea of what can be had quite cheaply.

it is worth looking around to see what is available within your budget.

It sounds like maybe your PSU doesn't supply enough wattage or you're hitting the shared bandwidth limit. With that being said, is there more than one hard drive or PCIe card installed besides the video card and main hard drive?

Try booting Hiren's Boot CD and see if the same issue occurs.

You might be able to go the 5.25" bay route. Amazon link

Pretty sure there is no usb3 header on the OP motherboard.

I wasn't aware my link had NOTHING but USB 3 only... In other words, one not need to use the header and just have USB 2 if they so wish. Lots of products in that link...

    pcie 2.0 x8 speed
The device has 8 lanes where each lane supports a max speed of 5.0Gbps. PCIE 2.0 supports a max speed of 5.0Gbps per single lane. So here the total speed is 8x5. 0Gbps= 40.0Gbps.

USB speed is measured in b/s not B/s. So 10Gb/s would be around 1.2G B/s

I agree with SIW2. Better spend a little more on a second hand, more modern computer that has USB 3.x

absolutely correct. the motherboard for the Acer M3910 computer is a proprietary board w/ Intel H57 chipset (1st gen Intel core) and never had a usb 3.0 header on it.
