    Problem with BD Writer

    I have a Matshita BD-MLT UJ272 Blu Ray Writer.
The drive shows up in file explorer and device manager but the tray won't open no matter how I try to open it. I've tried pressing the button on the front of the drive but nothing happens. I have also tried right clicking it in file explorer and saying Eject. I am at wits end. Please help!

I have a old DVD drive that is finiky with it's open button. Try a quick jab like press, a long press, and then eventually a normal press. Generally works for me after several tries. There's usually a tiny hole to stick a paper clip end in to emergency open the drive tray too. Good luck

The drive may be dead or it's the cable connector part not connected in the laptop correctly or the firmware in the drive and its communication with the computer has gone full on stupid. Does the light (if any) go on at least when you try to eject?

It's a slimline drive I don't know if there's a hole to emergency eject the tray or is there is even a light on the front of the drive.

All optical drives will have a hole in the tray.Look for it and you will see it. Insert a paperclip and push it till the tray opens. If it does not open, it indicates a mechanical problem. If the tray ejects and after this also the eject button does not release the tray, then it is an electrical problem. Either way it is not a do it yourself solution. You can give it to a friendly neighbourhood computer shop and check whether they can service it.

There is a hole on that optical drive for manual ejection of discs, to the right of the eject button.

If there is no power to the drive then you would look to the connection at the back.
Slimline drives may have no lights, though there might be in an external housing, whatever.

This assumes you have not jammed a disc in the drive.

Let's try eliminating the OS from the equation:

Reboot your computer and use some hotkey to interrupt the process. As an example, on some of my systems, I can press ESC and that will display a menu that allows me to choose what device to boot from, I can choose to enter the BIOS setup, etc. The point is simply that the OS is not loaded at this point. If you don't know of a hotkey you can try, then simply reboot the system and try the below before the OS has a chance to load.

Now, try to use the eject button on the drive. If it still will not open the tray, I would have to suspect a hardware issue. The only other thing I could offer at that point would be to unplug the SATA cable (leave power connected). Does the drive still fail to respond?

Okay I was able to manually eject the tray using a sim extractor tool. Next thing I will investigate is a power issue. I had another slimelime dvd writer in the computer that exhibited the same behavior so it's most likely a power issue. The power connection is a small plug not like a hard drive power cable. I'll have to look for another small type connector in the computer. If I can't find one I'll have to buy an adapter cable to convert a normal power cable to a small one so I can power the drive. Assuming the existing power cable is bad. I will try to reconnect it a couple times and see if it works or not just to be sure.
