Windows HID UPS Battery device hibernating with 98% of battery left.

I am running Windows 10 22H2 OS Build 19045.3324 on an HP G2 SFF desktop PC. It is powered by an APC Back UPS BE550G-CN and I am using the stock Windows HID UPS Battery device driver. I had the critical battery level set to 5% (for both AC and battery) and the critical battery action set to hibernate (for both AC and battery).

This has worked fine for three years and most of our outages are relatively short so the UPS has kept the PC operating fine for up to 50 minutes, but the last time there was a power failure the PC shutdown within a few seconds of the loss of AC with event ID 524, Critical battery level met. When I looked at the event details it shows:

    Event Data

    Index 0
    ActiveBatteryCount 1
    RemainingPercentage 100
    IsAcOnline 0
    BatteryActionInternalFlags 0x80
    IsPowerActionCallIgnored 0
    IsPowerPolicyEnabled 1
    PowerPolicyAction 3
    PowerPolicyBatteryLevel 5
    PowerPolicyEventCode 1
    PowerPolicyMinState 4

I wondered if it might be a PC problem but I tried this on two other PCs (same SW version) with the same UPS and got the same result.
Does anyone know why it would trigger the "critical battery level met" when it clearly says there is 100% remaining? Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Hi, you are probably better posting this on APC's forum.

I found this for you (in respect of a different model):

You may be observing the No Load shutdown feature enabled on the BX700U-GR.

Please reference the following information, which can be found in your Users Manual.

Windows HID UPS Battery device hibernating with 98% of battery left.

Thanks for the response and the information links.
I have not installed the Powerchute software. I did not see that it added any functionality that was not available with the default Windows driver (HID UPS battery).
I guess Powerchute is an option if I cannot resolve why the Microsoft Windows driver that worked fine for three years is now not working but resolving that would be my preference.

This sounds more like your UPS is not realizing your battery after 3 years and some outages is actually shot. In powershoot use the self test option to see if the pc stays on if it just turns off your batteries cannot hold the load and will need replaced. If so this is normal and should be done about every 5 years max IMO if the device has been in use. Does the HIPS driver perform self tests at all? I would replace the battery if needed from a store like Batteries+Bulbs.

EDIT: If it says critical battery level then windows does see the battery probably suddenly dropping and hibernates before your pc crashes. My CyberPower for instance can say it has a full battery, think it is fine, till if fails a self test.

I would say that your UPS battery need to be replaced.
The APC Powerchute software probably has a battery diagnostic toll.

Not resolved but easy work around

I still do not understand why Windows is saying the the critical battery level has been met immediately after a power fail when clearly the UPS still has lots of battery reserve but I have found a work around.

In the Power and Sleep settings click on change advanced power settings, and in the Power Option window that opens scroll down and expand the battery option, then critical battery level. Change the On Battery setting from the default of 5% to 10%.
If you find that the change will not take effect (as I did) then open a CMD window as admin and enter:
    powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_BATTERY BATLEVELCRIT 10 (Thanks to appuals.com!)
If you go back and check the setting again you should find it has changed to 10%.
Now when I unplug the UPS to simulate a power failure the battery icon in the tray shows % battery remaining and estimated time remaining, as it used to.
